An extra post for Halloween…

I’ve been chatting with Nikki about things that go bump in the night. Nikki mentioned that one night, when she was younger after moving house, she heard footsteps in her bedroom, stepping toward and away from her, and somebody opening and closing the door. When she opened her eyes, there was nobody there, but the door was wide open… unusual for it was usually closed. She has the full tale on her blog, so I don’t want to repeat it in full here, but she reminded me of the times I, and my family, have had experiences with ‘those from the next dimension’.
Imagine, if you will, that an eerie green glow now surrounds these words, and a distant laughter can be heard somewhere in the background. Mwah ha ha… or something like that!
Firstly, I’ll write about Dot.
Dot is the name I have given to a visitor who calls into Aqua Mansion every now and then. She doesn’t pop in as often as she used to, and I think I know the reasons why.
One evening, I was sorting through some paperwork… de-cluttering if you like. The big light was on (that’s Northern English for the main light, not a lamp or anything similar!), which was really needed to see what was being thrown away. My ghostly friend, Dot, likes my electrical things. She’ll open my disc drive drawer on my computer in the middle of the night, for instance, or turn the TV onto a different channel occasionally. Little things… nothing of what you’d class as poltergeist activity or anything.
So, I was kneeling on the floor sorting through papers. The light was on, and the music system and TV were both off. The TV was on stand-by, but the music system was completely off.
Dot wanted to play, so she switched the music system on. I always say “Hello!” to her when she does this, just to be friendly and to let her know that I know she’s there. I usually then turn the music system off again and carry on doing what I’m doing. Dot doesn’t tend to speak back, although one morning she said “Hello!” to me when I wasn’t expecting it, and nearly fell through the floor with shock! Anyway, this evening I switched the music system off, knelt back down and picked up an old phone bill.
Dot switched the music system on again. It was set to the radio option, and no sound was coming through, just a faint crackle of the radio static… white noise I think it’s called, which, when you are writing about ghosts seems to be a little ominous. I placed the bill down, stood up, and turned the music system off again. I said something like “What are you like, Dot!”, but then got back down to my sorting.
Dot turned the music system on again. So I got up again and switched it off. As soon as I got down once more… yes, she switched it on again. I got up a few more times, but I couldn’t carry on doing that all night. I was still on the same piece of paper!
Eventually, I stood up, said “You’ll have to stop this, Dot, I’m a little busy this evening!” (not in a nasty way or anything like that… just to let her know!) and I unplugged the music system from the power supply.
I got back down to my paperwork, filed the bill… and Dot switched the music system on again. And turned the volume up to the highest setting. The plug was well away from the socket… there was no actual power going to the system yet it was on. And loud.
I shot up to my feet this time. I said “Sorry! Here, you can play with it!” and plugged it back in. I turned the volume down, and left things as they were. I sorted a few more papers and then moved on to something else. Dot never came back that night. I think she was telling me that she didn’t need power to do what she was doing, but in doing what she did, she had depleted her personal power.
I felt bad that I had stopped her fun, but I wasn’t to know. I wasn’t expecting her to do something like that! She has been back a few times since then, but not as often as she used to. I still say a cheery “Hi” to her when she calls though. And she still likes my electrics.
My parent’s house has a few strange visitors on occasions… wispy clouds that appear and disappear in the corner of the living room… a heavy door (also to the living room) opening on it’s own (that actually happened in the middle of the afternoon, an a still Summer’s day!)… a faceless figure with a long overcoat and no legs standing, leaning around a bedroom door… my Mum didn’t see this figure… my brother did and watched as she walked straight through him!… I saw a figure walk into the living room, thinking it was my Dad, but when I walked in no-one was there… and my Mum had to move to one side to allow a figure to pass her on their stairs, not once but twice – once on the way up and once again on the way down. All of this happened over time I must add… it wasn’t in the same night or week or anything!
And finally, one last eerie thing to write about. One Monday morning I was off work, on holiday. I was having a sneaky lie-in, and at 10am I could hear a bell ringing. No ordinary bell… it was a school hand bell, the old fashioned ding – aling – aling – aling sound.
Nothing really untoward about that is there? Apart from (and I could be wrong here) I don’t think schools use hand bells anymore – it’s been like centuries since I was in school. If they do, that’s all well and good… but there aren’t any schools that close to Aqua Mansion where I could hear the school bells ringing from, even on a very windy day. The odd thing, however, is Aqua Mansion is built on the site of an old school. Now that makes me think a little deeper. Especially so since I only found out about that little fact after I had heard the bell.
So, there we have it. A quick run-down of my ‘ghostly’ experiences. With ghosts, you either believe or don’t, I don’t think there can be an in-between state. Even though I’ve heard things, experienced things, seen figures in the corner of my eye, I haven’t actually ‘seen’ a ghost, yet I have to believe they exist… I’ve experienced just a little too much for things to be ‘just’ coincidence.
But then again, I do experience lots of coincidences on a regular basis as well…
Ghosts or not, I wanted to share these experiences. I have mentioned some in posts on my blog before, but couldn’t resist doing so tonight, with it being Halloween and all!
The eerie green glow now lifts… and the odd background laughter becomes a distant memory. Or does it?
Mwah ha ha ha ha ha…!
Happy Halloween!
