Thoughts, by T.L.Merriman

A spark ignites an idea from an image, smell or sound
A few words grouped together gets a tale off the ground
A tale becomes a paragraph; a chapter; or a book
Possibly a trilogy (or more) with any luck.
The pen needs inspiration, to enable the tale to grow
And the balance of everything needs to be… well… just so
But when the idea isn’t there, the tale is hard to tell
And a book without a tale will not go down very well…

My Inner Writer, Tomliam Merriman, has been demanding a voice lately. Back in September, I announced I was writing a book, and set up a brand new blog under my then new nom de plume.

And that was all I did. The book never got started. The blog never got updated. And poor old T.L. languished about in the rather large void that is my mind. Hopefully looking for inspiration but failing to find the correct light switch.

Oh, he’s got company in there, so he’s not alone – there’s my Inner Zombie for one, and my Inner Woman, Thomasina, for another. There’s also the legacy of Bernard, my Inner Nagging Voice who I sent out into the far reaches of the Universe looking for broken pieces of needles in an endless number of haystacks. My Inner Leader of the Opposition makes an appearance occasionally for the odd political debate; my Inner Inventor throws random ideas into the mix, and my Inner Typist, Fingers, throws random letters into the text. And there are others, different inner aspects of me, who leap out without a moments notice, usually when they aren’t required. My Inner Confused self springs to mind quite a lot. He’s here now, actually… I’ve nicknamed him Tomfusion!

Tomliam Merriman moves them all to one side. He is focussed. Determined. And has one goal on his mind… to write that first book.

Unfortunately, being an aspect of my mind, Tomliam himself gets moved to one side as I have to deal with the things that happen in real life, such as working, sleeping, and lately, shovelling snow. And writing this blog – which too has been left on the shelf lately… it must be the weather.

I hope to be able to grant Tomliam’s wish and start his book. My book. I hope to be able to find the inspiration needed to get it started, the motivation to keep it going, the determination to see it through to the end, and the satisfaction of seeing it published.

I hope to be able to update Tomliam’s blog with news that the book is underway… and if not that blog, definitely this blog – the place where all my inner aspects come together under the header of the Five Mes.

I have a vivid imagination, I’m a dreamer, a thinker, a traveller, and I love to play with words. It may be a dream at the moment to be a writer, but it can be a reality. Dreams can come true.

I wonder, though, if this one will…

Oh, shucks, Tom. I know you CAN do it. Did you ever hear about the little engine that could? Well then, small steps, work up to bigger steps. Make the time and the words will come.

Small steps indeed, Tess. I can only give it a go, can’t I?

Thanks, Andra. I’m holding myself back by thinking I must start at the beginning… the middle has so many more opportunities for expansion as well!

Usually, my beginnings are just backstory that I end up shaving off, and the middle ends up being my beginning. So, start in the middle. 🙂

OK… I’ll see where this little adventure takes me once I start it (once again!) at the weekend!

It seems rather cluttered in inner TL. Maybe it’s time to ditch the inner nay sayers, cut back on the blogging to just one or a few posts a week, and shift your focus to writing that first book. Why not give it a serious shot?

It sounds rather cluttered in there, LA, but there’s miles of vast open space! Really, there is!
Every now and then, one of my Inner Voices will come along and try to make me do something different to what I’m currently doing… but not every day. I can go whole weeks without hearing a squeak!
I agree though, I do need to focus more on my book. I may give myself one day a week to start off with, and see how I go from there…

I think we are all trying to find the new souls we are becoming right now T…Finding that person I think begins with knowing what you want to do or be first, secondly giving yourself the permission to be or do this desire and lastly taking on the challenge and committing to it. The last one in that list is the hardest. So many of us fear commitment and worse, succeeding! Spend this weekend writing down what it is you TRULY want to do most, then go within and look for the obstacles which come up for you when you think about doing it. When you find them, this is where the work begins. Silencing those obstacles and choosing to commit. You are so gifted in so many areas I think it becomes overwhelming perhaps as to what to do. Pick your favorite and begin there T…Trying to do it all can shut you down. Good luck T….May you get unstuck and bolt forward! VK

You can do it, Tom. Pick one little piece and write it as if it was a blog post (you already know you can do that). Then write another little piece, and another, and another. Before you know it, you’ll have the beginning of a book – and then Tomliam won’t let you rest until you finish it. 🙂

I feel your pain. It took me forever to write my first book and I really don’t know whether it was a success or not.
Which actually explains why it has been so hard to start my second book…

I’d class having written a book to be a success, Hook.
At the moment, I’d actually class starting to write one a success!!!
