A few yesterdays ago

Yesterday

It’s time for another Illustration Friday! The theme this week, is Yesterday.

I can’t remember doing anything yesterday that warranted an illustration doing all of it’s own, so I abandoned that idea. I actually went a few yesterdays back, but still nothing came to mind.

It was then, that an idea struck me.

I know, I thought, I’ll go waaaay back in time. Create an image of yesterday that may have occurred.

I needed something that would link today and the past (yesterday), so it needed to be something old. Very old. Even older than that, actually!

Stonehenge sprung to mind.

I decided to go back to the time when Stonehenge was being built. Back to the time when only four upright stones were in place, and one top stone. Back then, I thought, they’d be decorated with intricate patterns and jewels, rather than just being plain stones.

I created an image of the end of the first day, with the Ancients looking on as the Full Moon shone through the centre of two of the stones, with the Moonlight being reflected back onto the stones, off the gathered crowd. I tried to capture the awe of the moment, without showing any of the faces, only partly in profile.

I wanted the image to reflect the feeling that those who were involved in building Stonehenge would have thought ‘not bad for a day’s work’; to reflect the feeling of eagerness to carry on the next day; and the feeling of the time, almost, where today becomes yesterday.

I also carried on the theme from last week’s entry with a group of people looking onto something, hopefully giving the impression that the viewer of the image is also there at that time.

I do like to do a bit of time travelling every now and then. I think next time, I shall go to the Pyramids!

Oh yes, Tom, one of those great mysteries, Stonehenge. It’s possible that the architects were looking at their achievement and thinking in unison, “Okay, we built it, but what is it?”

I can see them saying that, LA!
The thing is, there are lots of henges dotted about the place… they either had a franchise system going on back in the day, or they knew more than they’ve let on. Also, it must be said, that things could have been forgotten through the mists of time.

That is an awe inspiring illustration of Stonehenge, Tom ! I feel it’s the glowing stones…the moon shining and the night that makes it as magical as what we feel it is today!!

Good choice T !!! Stone Henge is so awesome. Great capture of the moment of the end of the days reveal. You got it just as you wanted it. Try seeing if the mansion would comply in putting these views outside your window when you need them. That would be awesome.Great job. Enjoy the last bits of the weekend….VK

You must have read my mind – or tapped into the Mansion’s energy or something – regarding the view from the window! 😉

so really, I’m travelling back in time, from your Pyramid post?… so by that count If I check another older blog, I’ll get younger perhaps?… or mayhap being the time traveller you don’t change just the area you visit… Shame, I was hoping for a much younger me, … AND before I forget, many thanks for a tip picked up from a previous blog of yours, about the little symbol at the top of the page, lighting up and showing that someone has made a comment etc. just getting to grips with all the changes since I’ve been AWOL., … Now the Monoliths, at Stonehenge, apparently there’s a new theory that people came from as far away as Northern Scotland, grouped together and built it, BUT how methinks? contact wise?… ’tis way before SMS, … Sometimes some theories are just that, a stray thought which should never see the light of day… I mean, you should hear some of mine.. I’d be locked up… xPenx

There’s the paradox of time travel, Pen. Even though we are heading backwards through time, we are still moving forwards in our lives, so we’re not getting any younger.
I hope the notification thingy is working well for you, Pen, mine’s a little temperamental of late.
(And I can’t get the image of prehistoric text messages being sent… and the devises used for sending them!)

    Aaah! 🙂

Stone Henge with all its myriad mysteries!!! 🙂

I like the Pyramids – they are the finest in burglar proofed buildings that were, erm, burgled more often than any other structure! 🙂

I wonder what the ghosts of the Pharoe’s make of their visitors and their bodies and grave goods being plundered by museums??? 🙂

    God Bless!

Given enough time, Prenin, we’ll crack anything!
It may take millennia in some cases, but we’ll get there!

Your theme on the past is captured well here Tom.. Love your creation… and love the way you have used the ‘light’ here.. Hope you had a good weekend and the snow is not too bad where you are today. 🙂

The weekend was good, but very heavy snow today… three white-outs in fact. Luckily, the snow never settled.

I’m a big fan of Stonehenge so I was immediately drawn to your illustration. I really like your palette here and the ‘point of view’ places you in the scene. Bravo!

The color and lighting scheme in this picture is instantly gripping. The moonlight picked up on the fringes of the figures’ silhouettes is particularly effective. Since the stones are (ostensibly) back-lit by the light of the moon, they ought to be similarly silhouetted. The fact that they are more thoroughly lit suggests a tantalizing inner glow. What medium did you use for this piece, Tom?

Thanks, Gabriel. When I first did this, it was meant to be earlier in the day, but I wasn’t happy with one of the figures so changed them to silhouettes (to cover up a mistake!) keeping just the edges with colour…
It’s just another digital piece, done on some software that came with my new tablet and pen thingy… I like it because it adds texture to the colours, but I’m still getting used to it!
