I cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food.

WC Fields said that.

William Claude Dukenfield, January 29, 1880 – December 25, 1946, according to Wikipedia, was an American comedian, actor, juggler and writer.

I always thought that WC Fields was a woman, not meaning to be impolite toward the memory of WC, or to WC himself, I hasten to add.

It’s an easy mistake to make. All I had to go on was a couple of initials and a surname, so there was a fifty per cent chance that I would be right. Which means there was also a fifty per cent chance I would be wrong. And I was.

I, occasionally, well, quite often, get people mixed up. On fewer occasions, I actually forget about the person completely (which can be slightly embarrassing at times, but I have already written a post about this, I seem to recall (That statement may or may not be right, when discussing the vagaries of my memory, however).)

The reason why I thought WC Fields was a woman is down to another person who was a woman. Gracie Fields. Gracie, who I also thought was Princess Grace of Monaco.

You see, I thought that Princess Grace of Monaco, was Gracie Fields before she was married, and her stage name was WC Fields. If I were to include these three people – I’m now well aware of the fact that they are, or were, separate people – in the six degrees of separation train of thought, I’d probably have to group them together, class them as one person, as one degree. I suppose I could, and should, class them as three degrees, but then that would bring in those of the “When Will I See You Again?” singing group (all female), and just add to the confusion.

Not that any of the Three Degrees have any connection to either of the Graces or WC, apart from sharing this post. I wonder, though, if being mentioned in an article with someone else classes as being part of the six degrees of separation? If so, the six degrees of separation then becomes really confusing, considering there have been actually fifteen or so singers in the Three Degrees – over time, obviously. But not one of them called Grace or Fields, I’m happy to say.

So, apart from the obvious link with the names, what other similarities are there between my random amalgamation?

Not that many, actually. Grace Kelly (born November 12, 1929) was an American actress, which links her to WC Fields in that line of work. Gracie Fields was also an actress, a singer and a comedienne, but British. She was born Grace Stansfield, in Rochdale, Lancashire, on January 9, 1898.

WC Fields was 18 when Gracie Fields was born, Gracie was at least thirty when Grace Kelly was born and Grace Kelly was 17 when WC Fields died, so they have all lead separate, and totally different lives, overlapping only for the brief seventeen years.

Until I came along and grouped them all together for all of eternity!

I cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food, WC Fields said. Maybe if I started cooking more and reducing the wine content, I may not get as mixed up. I may not call my friend Barbara Barney and Barney, Barbara any more. But then, where’s the fun in that?

Princess Grace passed away in 1982, and Gracie Fields in 1979.

And I don’t drink that much wine, honestly.

Grace Kelly: my heroine. WC Fields, not so much. Gracie Fields, not at all.

Hi Kate, I can’t say I really know about any of them, apart from the notion I had that they were one and the same for quite a few years. I did think that Gracie Fields was some kind of national treasure, though, but I have heard of divided opinion about her…

Yes, I can see why. She led a fairy tale life of sorts, from what I’ve read about her (not a great deal, I hasten to add!) Incidentally, Andra, I used to work with someone a few years ago who was the spitting image of her in that photo I’ve included in the post… but I don’t know what she’s doing now, in case MTM enquires! 😉

I loved when WC Fields was asked how he liked children and he replied: ‘Boiled’… 🙂

    God Bless!

Did you write this post while drinking wine? If so, here’s a snippet from WC’s classic 1933 short “The Fatal Glass of Beer” — a comedic parody of melodramas from that era set in the Yukon . I particularly liked his joke about not being able to clear his throat properly due to not being able to get Epicac (a substance used to induce vomiting) — and yes, I can easily identify WC from Grace Kelly from Gracie Fields and I’ll add from Strawberry Fields. Check out the clip:

Hi LA… no, I wasn’t drinking when I wrote this, although I did just allow my fingers to type away, which can, at times, give the impression of being done so with drink.
Thanks for adding that clip, I liked the line ‘don’t go round breaking people’s tambourines’ at the end. That’s a fact everyone should carry with them always.

WC was such an underrated philosopher; a genuine life coach come to think of it.

hehehe! If it were up to me, I’d increase the wine intake…that might actually help with the remembering of names and such 😉 I’m not sure if this is worse or not but I can remember faces…just not the names! It really wouldn’t be too bad if I didn’t remember the faces and names…I’d just blame it on my dirty glasses or something, but to smile at a familiar face and have that face with body approach you calling out your name but you realize too late you have forgotten theirs!! Ugh!

      Hi Shree!
That’s a problem of mine too, not remembering the names but knowing the faces. That happened to me the other week, by the time I’d remembered their name the conversation was over and they’d walked on. It’s so obvious that I don’t know. But hey… better late than never I suppose!

haha! I’ve actually had full conversations with people without mentioning their names. I think it’s an art that we refine over time (and desperation) And you’re right better late than never (for me though sometimes it’s never….)

It is an art! As is pretending that you know them whilst desperately trying to remember who they are and where you know them from! The mind’s great fun at times, isn’t it?

Now you sure you got that label on that wine bottle right Tom and its not the 3 Drops of the Good stuff Vol 12% Now that was a good year.. .. I often put a splurge of wine into cooking, to let you into a secret I had several bottles of that Christmas Mulled wine bought me, and while its nice heated up on a cold and frosty morning at Christmas time there isnt much else to do with it.. So I splurge away and the added spices all add to the cooking mix .
Another bit of useless information is that My Mother went to see Gracie Fields sing with my grandmother Many Moons ago,, and somewhere in the attic among a pile of dust lies the signed programme by Gracie herself…
And enjoyed this light hearted read Tom very much ~lazing on a Sunday Afternoon.. .

It was probably a dodgy batch, Sue. I’ll claim that anyway! 😉
Now that mulled wine being added to cooking sounds very nice… very worth a try!
      And a signed programme – I’m certain that’ll be a collectors item…

It certainly seems to…but maybe it’s just me…maybe just maybe I have a strange obsession with your bathroom? Maybe I need to get a grip on things? Change the record? Basically just get right out of the hair gel for once! Ok… I will work on it…no more mentions of your bathroom 😀

You can mention the bathroom as many times as you want to, Icewolf! I know I’ll be mentioning it again once or twice in a few upcoming posts. Maybe not so much the hair gel as I’m almost out, but, I may have to have a go at creating a batch for myself sometime soon, so that may get another mention as well! 🙂
