Time and Tide Wait for No Man

My old friend King Canute knows the above phrase very well, although his time was certainly well before the person who came up with the phrase, Geoffrey Chaucer.

King Canute ruled these lands around the turn of the first Millennium in modern times, the year 1000. Geoffrey Chaucer stepped foot here about 350 years or so later, and continued exploring his time up until 1400.

Geoffrey was a poet, an alchemist, and an astronomer. I’d like to say like me, but we’ll not go there.

In 1350, and up until quite recently, all things considered, it was believed that the Earth was the centre of the Universe, and the Sun, the Moon, the stars and all of the visible planets rotated around it.

The image above was created in 1568 by Bartolomeu Velho, which shows how the heavens were linked to the Earth back then. Clicking the image will take you to more information regarding this, should you want to find out more.

It was in the late Sixteenth / early Seventeenth Century when thoughts and ideas surrounding this theory began to change, which at the time must have been absolutely scandalous. “What?” You can hear folk of the time saying, “How can they say this? They’re changing the very fabric of reality with this nonsense. There is no way the Earth can not be the centre of the Universe. The Earth doesn’t even move!”

We know now that it does.

Everything moves. The Earth. The Sun. The Galaxy. The tides… the time (in fact, in the UK, the clocks move ahead one hour at 1am on 29th March 2015 – just a little reminder for my fellow Brit bloggers there!)

The point to this post? Well, this goes to show that things can change. Even long-held beliefs… Some things take time, but others can happen a lot quicker if we feel the need to change.

Want change? Best get on with making the changes now. Time and tide wait for no man, don’t forget! In the words of Mr Chaucer himself:

Time lost, as men may see, for nothing may recovered be.

The life so short, the craft so long to learn.

Certain, when I was born so long ago, Death drew the tap of life and let it flow; and ever since the tap has done its task, and now there’s little but an empty cask.

But regarding change, remember…

It is not all gold that glareth.

Make your changes sooner rather than later. Feel Good making those changes. If you don’t like how things turn out… change again. There’s no time like the present!
