From the top

This week, I’m attempting to write a song.

I have no idea where these daft ideas come from, they just pop up. In yesterday’s post, I looked at the structure of a song… today, I shall be looking at the lyrics.

The theme I’ve decided to go with is a journey. It’s a safe theme, and can have a beginning, a middle and an end. Can have… as if a journey doesn’t have one of those parts. OK, maybe life doesn’t quite have the end yet, but that’s where we’re all headed. Actually, that’s given me an idea…

I intend on using the chorus as a diversion on the journey, so they can be a little different to the rest of the song.

The only thing I need to work out now are the words to go into each section.

I’m going to begin at the beginning.

It’s probably the best place to start after the chorus, where I was going to start until I changed my mind… unless I actually began with the chorus. No, I’ll begin at the beginning.

So, what makes up a journey? Hmmm…

  • Deciding on where to go
  • Getting ready to go
  • Deciding how to go (car, plane, boat)
  • Going, and the other bits in the middle
  • And getting there

There’s not many steps, thinking about it. Actually, walking from Cheshire to London would contain lots of steps, but I digress.

What makes a journey interesting?

  • The way to travel
  • The scenery along the way
  • The companions we travel with, or the music we listen to as we travel (or the book we read if we go by train – not when we driving, obviously!)
  • The dillops we come across when on the road – I bet some of them read whilst driving
  • The diversions or the bumps in the road
  • The hold ups
  • The signs we see along the way
  • The anticipation as we get nearer to our destination
  • And finally, arriving at where we’re going

But wait! I’m writing about actual journeys here… surely my attempt at writing this song is a journey in itself!

There!

My song is going to be about the journey I’m taking as I write this song!

Thank you, Sue, and big smiles right back… although I wonder if the smile will remain with the finished song? I’ve seen it, don’t forget! Hehehe!
It was fun though… that’s all I’ll say for now!
Hope you have a fabulous week also!

Fascinating to watch your creative process on this, Tom – I never would have thought to break it down like that. 🙂

Thanks, Diane. The idea came from how the song was broken down, so I just took it from there. Whether it works remains to be seen. There’s no music, don’t forget. Or a singer, for that matter!

Thanks, VK. Interesting is one way to describe it… the whole thing was a bit of a detour anyway. Or a diversion…
