Bad Gateway

When I come online, I have a set number of sites that open automatically so all I need to do is click on whichever tab I want to view. I’m sure I’m not the only one to do that, but it does save me a couple of milliseconds each time. Well, time is of the essence, is it not?

Occasionally – more often than not – one of the sites breaks down, and instead of seeing the name of the site on the tab, I see another message. Usually ‘Error’ and sometimes a timeout message. Today, I saw the words ‘bad gateway’, and they set my mind off on an incredible journey.

Out in the Grinds, down at the far end quite close to the lake where the plesiosaur lives, is an old stone wall. It’s about two metres tall and covered in ivy and other creeping plants and moss. I think the wall probably circled the whole Mansion and Grinds back in the day, but part of the wall has collapsed. Some of the stones have stayed where they fell, some being reclaimed by Earth herself, with grasses and flowers growing around them. And one of the stones, for some reason, seems to be a hotspot for mushrooms and toadstools.

The toadstools are the fascinating part. Yellow and white; red and white; and one is blue and white! I’ve never seen anything like it before in my life! They’re huge as well – well, the sizes range from apple-sized to pumpkin-sized.

Around the toadstools, and the stones, appears to be a path of some kind. Only tiny, I have to add, as though whatever creatures visit the area follow the same path and don’t veer from it.

I followed this tiny path to a part of the wall that hadn’t collapsed, and, at the bottom, was a small hole covered by a tatty square piece of wood.

Beyond the wall is The Rest Of The World, or the Extended Grinds, leading to towns, cities and the rest of  England. Quite special in its own right, but nothing too spectacular – it’s just there.

Curiosity, and an overactive imagination, got the better of me, and I crouched down to move the piece of wood and have a look into the hole.

I wasn’t expecting what I found next. The piece of wood was a door, connected to the wall with a tiny hinge. It was in a bad state, as the rest of the wall, and hence I knew there was a hole. The door opened outwards, so towards me… and I peered within the hole; expecting just to see the world beyond.

And I did see that. Not our world though, a completely different – almost alien – world. Glass buildings and skyscrapers gave that away. I couldn’t see any movement, but I could only see a small glimpse through the hole – there’s no way I’d fit through it, even if I lost a little weight. I’d actually need to lose a lot of height to be able to get through. I’d need to get down to one inch!

So, at the very far end of the Grinds is a ‘new’ gateway. A bad gateway, for I cannot get through it to explore that different place beyond, although already my mind is working overtime conjuring up all kinds of images as to what could actually be there.

I may try to see if there’s another way through one day, but for now it will have to remain a realm within the imagination. There’s always something, isn’t there?

There is Indeedy, Sir Prenin, always something, to feed the imagination and wonder. (I get ‘bad checksum’ on Spybot sometimes, but just means I have to try another of the download links. never had Bad Gateway tho’) Now, you’ve started my brian the brain off. What about a potion, from your bath…erm..Laboratory? But like Alice you’d need a ‘grow ‘ and a ‘reduce’ one.. No good being left little eh? or you’d be left forever trying to jump onto those lovely blue/white mushrooms, fending off insects and at the mercy of whatever made those path tracks.. Magic? What about borrowing my magic wand? erm.. It went invisible and I can’t find the flippin’ thing. So, bad gateway it will remain ’til you find the answer… I shall await further updates. and have a good Sunday, I’m still trying to locate that infuriating wand… You not seen it have you? xPenx

I could have a go at creating a ‘shrink me / grow me’ potion, Lady P, but I don’t seem to be greatly successful when I’m creating this type of thing. Magic however is most definitely an option! I’ll let you know!

Hmmm… I suspect the fungi near the wall may have become home to the little folk and you’ll have to be careful where you step!!! 🙂

Being cursed by the fairy folk is not something I would enjoy much!!! 🙂

    God Bless!

    Prenin.

Ever the adventurer, Tom. How busy the world around you keeps you occupied.
Seems to me the fairies from some other place have set up house in the wall. Keep the cat away. Please. 😎

I think the cats are fine, Tess. It’s the plesiosaur that needs watching I feel… I think it has a taste for mushrooms!

Tom, if you need to ‘Borrow’ anything then please feel free to ask,, I am acquainted with Pod! and Arrietty! I am sure they would go down the hole for you, and if you should have any thing they could ‘Borrow’, I am sure these little Borrowers would take a snap shot of the other side for you.. They do micro pictures these days… 😉 So I am sure there is a spy camera small enough to do the job..

Hope to hear how they got on… xox
    Enjoy your week

I can picture it in my mind’s eye, Tom. Now to find a shrinking potion. Perhaps Lewis Carroll might have something within his pages or letters to help.

Yes, the shrinking potion is my top priority right now… I shall see what I can come up with!

How very intriguing! A tiny little door in the Mansion grounds! So the rest of the world lies beyond it? No danger of you getting loose out there then lol unless you shrink to the size of a very small ant 😉

I know, Icewolf, but I am working on a lotion or a potion or something, to see if I can get myself down to that size. I need to see what is through that door!

I’m with Kate. this post had a Lewis Carroll feeling to me, too, Tom. If I encountered a computer glitch, I’d probably just reboot and get on with it. You were quite impressively inspired!
