I’m gradually losing interest in Valentine’s Day already. I thought I’d have a go at ‘cashing in’ on the season, as I usually do each year, but I don’t mind admitting that I find watching paint dry far more entertaining.
That said, I’ve had a quick nosy around, and gathered a little bit of information relating to playing cards.
Yes, that’s right.
I’ve resorted to playing cards.
Not to playing cards, but to playing cards. Ordinary cards… not Tarot cards, Oracle cards or Zener cards, or any other type of card that may exist.
Incidentally, and before I get to the main point of this post, I’d just like to let you know that one night – a dark and spooky night many Moons ago, a group of friends and I were sitting outside in the cooling air, when suddenly and mysteriously a pack of Zener cards appeared.
Well, they’d been in my pocket all evening, and when the conversation changed to psychic abilities I asked a friend if she would like to ‘have a go’ at experimenting with the cards with me. She would look at the top card, and then look at me, and then I would say what the card was.
Bear in mind there was a group of us sat around the table, some who could see the cards, and others, at my side of the table who obviously couldn’t.
The pack of cards was shuffled to excess, and then the experiment began.
I got the first one right. And the second. And the third. And the next. And the next. And so on, until we’d gone through the whole pack, each card of the twenty-five being revealed after I’d said what it was.
The cooling air became considerably cooler, the conversation less jokey, and the atmosphere quite surreal.
We tried again just afterwards, and got every one wrong. The mojo was gone, but the experience had already been had. I enjoyed it.

Anyway, onto the post.
The Valentine’s part of the post.
In an ordinary pack of playing cards, there are four suits. Hearts, Spades, Clubs and Diamonds. These cards can also be used in a similar way as Tarot, for telling one’s fortune.
As it’s Hallo – I mean Valentine’s – I’m focussing on the love aspect, and the cards that present their own special meanings to the season.
The Queen of Hearts is the most obvious choice to go for. She represents Venus, or Aphrodite – the Goddess of Love.

The Jack (or Knave) of Hearts, represents Cupid, or Eros – the God of Desire.

And the twos all represent good luck, with the Two of Diamonds signifying, yes you guessed it, the ring and (possible) marriage.

The other cards hold their own meanings as well; the threes, for instance, signify a surprise, the fours show things will remain as they are, and the fives indicate lovers’ meetings. Sixes show pleasure but sevens indicate disappointment. Eights indicate merriment, and nines indicate change. Tens show settlement. All of the queens represent women, and the kings represent men.
So, now you have those very brief details, go and shuffle yourself a pack of cards, and spread five out before you.
Do you get more of one number? Do you get the Queen of Hearts?
What stories do the cards want to tell you? Have fun, and don’t take it too seriously… life’s life and the cards are well, just cards!
As an extra bit of fun, see if you can call the card before revealing it to yourself. There are more cards in an ordinary pack than a Zener pack, but you’ll remember it forever if you get them all right!
