NaBloPoMoNaNoWriMo

I was debating whether to join up for NaNoWriMo this month, as a way of kick-starting my book that I keep promising to write. Part of me was geared up for the challenge, but the other two parts were more than dubious about the whole thing.

Not the challenge itself – it seems a good idea if you have the time to put in. And, although time as a concept can be bent, I don’t have enough flexible time remaining from all of the other things that I do, to be able to bend it, stretch it and mould it into the shape that I want. Besides which, I have a feeling that after waiting for so long to get my book started, to rush it through in thirty days may not give it, or the characters involved, the justice they deserve.

So, I’ve decided against joining NaNoWriMo once again.

There’s another challenge that has suddenly appeared as well, the NaBloPoMo. I participated in the first PostADay challenge decades ago (it seems!) and failed miserably. OK, that challenge was for a whole year, and on the whole, I did manage quite well, but again it takes time.

I posted every day in October with my Halloween themed posts, which is the first time in a while that I’ve completely filled the calendar with posts, so rather than saying I shall post every day in November (which I will try to do, incidentally) I am classing October as my NaBloPoMo challenge completed in full. And early! Woohoo!

November has quite a few events taking place, including Movember, a worthy cause to raise funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer and mental health, and I’ve seen quite a few blogs already supporting this cause. I’m hoping that my mentioning it here will raise just a little more awareness, albeit small.

Unfortunately, I look terrible with a moustache. Apart from the fact that I appear to be allergic to my own facial hair, and, if I do grow a moustache, it takes on the same characteristics as the rest of my hair on my head and juts out at all sorts of jaunty angles, including the severe flick I occasionally carry around with me. It’s probably best that I don’t attempt to grow an elaborate moustache, merely to avoid frightening unsuspecting passers-by who may notice me.

So, it appears I’m not doing anything for November after writing all that.

There are a few other, lesser known events taking place this month. I may, at some point join in with one of them, but my dubious two-thirds are telling me to stay away:

  • NaGoGoPoGoMo – National Go-Go dancing on PoGo sticks Month
  • NaSiDaMo – National Sing Daily Month
  • NaChoYumMo – National Eat Chocolate Month
  • NaWriBluMo – National Write with a Blue pen Month
  • NaShoTitMo – National Shorten Titles appropriately Month

Perhaps you’ve heard of a few others taking place? If, like me, you are a little dubious about the above five, then we are in the same frame of mind. I can’t find anything to authenticate any of them, anywhere on the web. The first three mentioned (at the beginning of this post) are genuine, and have been authenticated by the author of this post. That’s me, by the way. He he he. (That was for NaLaOwPunMoNoMaHowUnf – National Laugh at your Own Puns Month, no matter how un-funny)

I have never done NaNo. I have written almost three novels, in spite of that. You don’t need a month to do it. Just start. 🙂

It’s the start that I need, Andra. A shove. A jolt. A push… anything to get me going.
It took me years to get this blog started, but now I love it! I can see myself starting soon…

No . . No NaNo or BloMo for Moi!

Now . . . NaLaOwPunMoNoMaHowUnf – National Laugh at your Own Puns Month, no matter how un-funny seems like it might be worth a shot!

Apart from the chocolate eating one I would fail miserably too, and even the chocolate challenge is not going to be one that I choose either, because to tell you the truth I am literally swamped with my own this, that and the other, well not enough of the other but we won’t even go there 🙂 lmao

I think that your moustache gives you the Cavalier image, so perhaps it could work rather well, though if adopting the Casanova range then be careful or you could be a lot busier than you thought possible 😉 Well if you are lucky enough I mean 🙂

Have a great evening Tom and thanks for the wicked read 🙂

I think I prefer the Cavalier look to a Roundhead one, Andro… I’ve always been a bit behind the times with my fashion sense!

If there’s a Na No attached, I just say, “No”, Tom. I think Audra’s advice is what you should take to write your book. It’s intelligent.

Think seriously about your book Tom! 🙂

Like me you have the imagination to spare, so start by making notes and assemble them in some kind of order! 🙂

Once you have the skeleton of the story, flesh it out and try to stick to a time line.

The editing will be the hard part!!! 🙂

    God Bless!

I will be starting soon. I’m actually getting tired of hearing myself say that now…

I’m NaNo-ing again this year, because I enjoy it. 🙂 Of course, WriMo isn’t the only time I write novels, but the NaNo writers’ camaraderie is invigorating and uplifting. For me, it isn’t about winning, it’s about participating. OK it’s about winning too. 🙂 Best of luck in WriNonNaNoMo (Writing a Non-National Novel this Month).

Thanks, CM. When I do start, I want to enjoy it and not feel rushed.
Then maybe, I can start a second. Yikes! First things first!!!

I love the chocolate eating one! And may I say that I’m quite jealous that you’ve done your daily posting in October already! Which means you can kick back and enjoy November 😛

I agree with Andra, Tom..tell your 2/3rds to shush and just start the novel…I have a feeling it would be awesome! Your posts sort of remind me of Douglas Adams…I mean have you read any of this books?
It seems like nonsense…but wow..it’s amazing to read!

Have a great November and please a picture of the unfortunate moustache if you decide to grow one..okay? Teeheehee

I shan’t be growing a moustache, however. My upper lip would not be able to tolerate it… although, I may be able to provide a couple more pictures through the month. There’s food for thought…

How dapper in a stash TL….As you know from my lack of posting lately, writing has gone quietly to rest on a shelf for a while. Don’t know why, it just has. I think we go in cycles just as the seasons do. I never worry for I know it will always return. Write if you feel the desire TL, but pushing it it meaningless. Takes all the umphh out of what you are writing. It has to come from the heart. Do what you will for as long as you like and no more. Take care my friend and I do like the chocolate challenge best 🙂 VK

You’re right about the cycles, VK. I think October has wiped me out once again… I’ve reverted to the weather for today’s post! Sigh…
You’re right about doing the right amount as well. Makes sense just to do what I can do.

The mustache make you look so debonair, Tom.
I’m impressed your carried through a blog a day for the whole month of October. That takes lots o energy in my book. I joined NaNoWriMo last year and it is invigorating. Forced me to get the thing DONE. As mentioned earlier, just write. All you need is Ass in Chair. 😉

Thanks, Tess! It does take energy… and I think it’s depleted mine right now!
And yes. Sit, write… and go with the flow. I always say it… but not very often do I do it…

Congratulations on completing NaBloPoMo a month early – you’re such an overachiever! 😉

You’re smart to avoid forcing yourself into the NaNoWriMo mould. I’d like NaNo better if it focused on committing to write or plot a little each day instead of committing to “finish” a novel in a month. I think forcing yourself to write that much would make it a chore instead of a joy. I’ve written seven novels, and even now I wouldn’t attempt NaNo – I might be able to do it, but I’d hate the process and probably hate the novel when I was done.

Here’s wishing you the joy of writing your novel at your own pace! 🙂

Thanks, Diane. I knew the November BloPo was coming up. Actually, I didn’t, but October still stands for me!
I agree – if you feel forced into doing something, like NaNo, it wouldn’t be as much fun as doing it at a comfortable pace.
And I WILL write my novel… I will enjoy it… and it will be done at the pace I choose. Once I start it, that is. Sigh… 😉
