Should that be there…?

This Mansion of mine does strange things to one’s mind. I suppose having a strange mind to begin with helps, but it isn’t all about me, me, me, me, me. No. The Mansion is partly to blame as well.

Oh, before I go on, that lastish sentence has reminded me of something about this blog. You may already have noticed, but if not, I’ll let you in on a little secret; but as it’s a secret, don’t tell anyone. See if they notice for themselves!

I’ve decided to change the name of the blog. There are still going to be posts about me, obviously, as it’s my blog, but it isn’t all about me. The new name reflects this fact, I hope. The Sphere, by the way, is the Universe and everything in it. And around it… or outside of it. Everything really. Fact, fiction, real, surreal. So, apart from the name change everything’s still the same.

Anyway, back to my original post. And the Mansion.

I’ve been exploring the Cellar. Actually, the catacombs below the Cellar. There’s always a strange rumbling noise down there, I may have mentioned it before, although possibly not. The rumbling was louder whenever I walked past an old oak door.

Quite exactly what an old oak door is doing in the middle of a series of caves leaves me baffled at the moment, and why I’d never bothered opening it before opens another series of as yet unanswered questions. Never mind… maybe they’ll be answered one day.

Today, I opened the door.

The heat hit me first.

Then the smell. A putrid, sulphuric burning metal smell, that literally singed the hairs within my nose (although that may just be wishful thinking on my behalf – I’ve been wanting to rid myself of those nasal hairs for years!)

Then, the rumbling sound brought me back to where I was.

Inside a large cavern, surrounded by blackened rocks.

I suddenly realised that I could see, even though it was quite dark a reddish glow illuminated the cave quite well.

I walked around the cave a little, when the rumbling noise was joined by a hissing sound. And, ahead, I could see steam. Steam escaping through a small hole in the rocks I was walking on.

I knelt down and peered into the hole, and saw what was causing everything that was causing my senses to dance.

Beneath me, not too far down, was a river. A river of molten lava. A bubbling, meandering, hissing, fast-moving stream of hotness that every now and then fired bursts of bright yellow flames in any direction. It seemed to be alive. And as it flowed, I got the sensation that I was moving along with it, although in the opposite direction.

I stayed, travelling like this for quite a few minutes, took a few photos with my mobile phone and then decided to head back to the randomness of the Mansion. I securely closed the old oak door that looked totally out of place, which was actually hiding a cave within a cave. I walked back through the catacombs, up the old and very uneven stone stairs, and into the Cellar. I locked the door, and put the key away in its safe place, the Jar on the Shelf.

Sometimes, doors are closed for a reason. Sometimes, whatever is lurking behind the door isn’t exactly what you’d expect to be there. I should really know that with this Mansion of mine.

Still trying to get back into the full blogging swing; this post is written in response to Sideview’s latest Weekend Theme, which is, incidentally, Should that be there…?

Really?! I didn’t know the Mansion was harbouring the dark pits of hell underneath the cellar!! lol 😉 I think maybe you should leave that key in the jar in future…as to whether it should be there…well no, actually I don’t think it should – the dark pits of hell underneath the cellar that is 😉 Not the key…although maybe it would be better if that wasn’t there either!! 🙂

Icewolf, the Mansion spans many dimensions, so it makes sense that the dark pits of hell would be somewhere around. Actually, thinking about it, that would probably explain where all of those monsters that lurk in the Grinds come from…

I think I may move the key and the Jar to a safer place, away from the Cellar. Just to be safe. Safer.

Considering you have the pits of hell beneath the mansion and this could get very dodgy…I would throw the key straight into the furnaces of hell and run like….hell!!!

I’ve had a thought Icewolf… what if the residents of Hell want the key? If I throw it in, they’ll have a way out.
          I’d best move the Jar, I think…

No no nooooo!! Change the lock to the door to the pits of hell lol…after all it is your mansion hell is currently residing under 😉 Throw the old key into the roaring furnace of tortured souls…so they think they can escape…just the sort of devilish behaviour expected around the inferno of doom under the mansion lol…very quickly lock the door to hell with the new key then pop it in the jar and hurl it out to sea…one of your mansion windows will surely supply a sea outside 🙂 Hell won’t be able to retrieve it from there…fire and water not having the best of relationships!

Devilish indeed! What a mind you have, Icewolf! 😉
They seem to have another way of getting out apart from the door, especially around Halloween, so hurling the new key into a sea may not really help. I may try it though, one day… I’ll let you know how I get on.

I noticed the name change immediately, Tom. When your email came through (because you’re one of the bloggers I have on an email list, so I never miss a post), I said, “I don’t subscribe to…..oh, it’s Tom.

Good to see you. I’m glad you made it out of that cellar!!

Your new blog name had me confused and I thought I had been victim of yet another cock-up by WP!!! 🙂

Good to see it was you though Tom – and I suspect we have discovered the power source of the mansion!!! 🙂

Geothermal energy is a powerful energy source and environmentally friendly!!! 🙂

    God Bless!

I saw you on WordPress Reader, Sir Aquatom, so there you were, picture ‘n all, (well, not all, but it was you, sorta thing) and ’twas only when the background came up all sky and clouds that I thought straight away, this is different. Nothing gets past me, well, that’s not true, but I like to think that. Strange how one has an idea of oneself, and it’s probably erroneous, like, I was thinking in response to you going deep underground and discovering allsorts, well, as if I’d do the same, BUT would I? Being of sane mind, probably not. but then am I? So, having sorted that out, well, how do you cope? Knowing what’s behind the strange Olde Oak Door? I’d be forever checking that it’s locked still, (it is locked innit?) and then I’d probably want to go and check the lava run, make sure it’s not spreading. What about the foundations to the Mansion, are they still ok and Ooo worrying stuff all told. I feel the same way sometimes, looking at running liquids, water and lava, you almost sink into them and fall forward. In answer to the question should that be there? no it flippin’ shouldn’t, I’d get the council in. I would. 😉 xPenx

No problem, Pen… I like long comments, short ‘uns and them in between!
Somewhere between the lava and the Cellar are the Ley Lines… it’s all going on down there!
And yes, the door is well and truly locked.
Until next time I venture down there…
Hope your sleeping pattern is restored quickly for you.

I definitely noticed the change though it may be considered a little like cheating 😉 The email notification for your new post stood in line in my email box, quite proudly I might add…which got me a little puzzled. Hmm? I went. Within the Sphere? I don’t know anyone carrying that name! And THEN I spied….Tom Merriman…and I went..oooo what have we here!
    LOL!
I think it’s totally AWESOME that you’ve decided to change things around..though not to say I didn’t like the Me me ME me Me me theme and all, change is good, change means we are changing, we aren’t static or stuck in a rut..but are moving and that’s always good (well unless we obviously move in the wrong direction…if you know what I mean 😛 )

I think if I ever visited your mansion I might need a guide..in fact…hey…Inner Scientist would do well making a GPS just for the mansion!! 😀 Old door that aren’t supposed to be where they are..you know, to some that would mean that there are things that you are hiding from yourself and opening the door is a good thing because you are facing your fears! – but of course I’m not actually saying that because that would mean I’m psychoanalyzing your post (or your Mansion) and we all know that Mansions can’t be analyzed! ….or can they????? O.O

I don’t think this Mansion could be analysed, Shree… it is constant in one thing only. It is constantly changing! Or is that me? I get confused between the two. No, it isn’t me.
My Inner Scientist has made a note of your suggestion. We’ll have to wait and see what happens!

I believe you are a brave, brave man to live in that mansion. So many weird goings-on. If it was me, I would have been gone a l–o–n–g time ago. The oak door makes it all clear to me. Run, Tom. Now, while the running is possible. They (who? I don’t know) want you to become complacent and then whoop, out they come and … and… ?

I know exactly what you’re saying, Tess. The thing is, it’s like I’m attached to the Mansion. Like it’s part of me. Wherever I go, it goes… I will be keeping my eyes open for ‘them’, whoever they may be!

Tom, your post arrived in my email so I was also able to see it was from you and not spam. I cannot recall if it was Shakespeare or a Taco Bell burrito ad that said, “change is good”. So sure, change the name of your site. But, you might want to avoid revisiting your cellar.

Great take on the theme and great new look, Tom. I like your new blog name. For some reason it reminded me of this picture: it appeared unattributed in a nineteenth century French book called’ The Atmosphere: Popular Meteorology ‘

There is always light around us, even if we don’t think we can see it at times; but even then, if we really can’t see the light we have our good memories to help us through until we can again.
