Ice Dancing in the warm cold

Aqua Mansion is now quiet this evening, however it hasn’t been quiet for long. About thirty minutes ago, torrential rain was pounding at the window, which is in complete contrast to the weather warnings we have been issued today. Extremely heavy snow between 3pm and 6pm here in North West England the forecasters told us. I was driving this morning, and even the motorway signs were declaring ‘Warning: Adverse weather forecast for today’.

Yes, it’s been cold. Beyond cold could be a way to describe it, but the kind of warm cold that comes when it snows. Although we had the warm cold without the snow.

When I returned to my car, after leaving it parked in the middle of a slowly filling car park for an hour or so this morning, I was surprised to see icicles hanging beneath it. The driver’s side door (the one I have to use, funnily enough!) was frozen solid, as if some blast of icy cold wind had suddenly blown through the car park and instantly froze every drop of water that was on that side of the car.

The icicles were still there when I returned home, so it must have been cold considering the heat that can come from the engine.

Also, when I returned home, I noticed that the roads and pavements were covered in some kind of white ‘stuff’. Not exactly snow, and not exactly hailstone. I think that as it rained, and as the ground was so cold, the water droplets froze instantly where they touched. And then, as the hail and further raindrops came down, this white covering continued to expand. That’s how my Inner Meteorological Professor described it, and I’m not going to argue with him – I have no idea what he waffles on about half of the time.

It was like walking out onto an ice rink when I set foot on it! I’d parked my car in the courtyard outside of the Mansion, and nearly slid all the way back to where I had come from when I placed one foot onto the ground – or rather, I would have done if my left foot hadn’t remained in the car. I could have had a very nasty accident had my right foot not skidded the instant I stepped out, and my Inner Contortionist took control, and twisted my body to stop me moving any further. Being able to move like that should automatically put me into the ‘professional’ status for an ice dancing championship. I may be feeling this move tomorrow.

I composed my balance, gained my skating legs, and robotically walked into the mansion. My boots are made for walking, but on a good summer’s day. My legs are also made for walking, but they didn’t seem to want to conform with their allotted task this morning in the manner they are accustomed to.

The hours between three and six came and went. The threatened blanket of snow never materialised. And it has now started to rain again. I can hear the heavy raindrops pattering against the window.

Hopefully, the ground will be warmer tomorrow, and I’ll be able to walk as I usually do, and not as a rusty old robot. To look at me walking, it isn’t that much of a difference, but I know myself that it is…

Hope the adverse weather isn’t causing many problems where you are, IF you are experiencing adverse weather, that is…

We’re in the middle of snowfall here! The first of the year, and the forest has already gone ethereally white. Nice, especially as tomorrow is Sunday..

There is something magical about the snow, isn’t there, Kate?
It is thick with fog here today… I think that was forecast too!

Yes it has been snowing a lot this evening Sir Aquatom
and the big freeze seems to be setting in also, it is likened
to a frozen pond with a hint of frenzied skater… Similar to
    your earlier experience I shouldn’t wonder 😦

Of course by tomorrow it will either be dig the car out with
a shovel or wonder if it ever really snowed at all? 🙂

It is rather funny weather at the moment isn’t it my fine and
wicked friend… I am pleased that your acrobatic skills came
into fruition and that you didn’t fall A over T 🙂

Have a skate-free rest of weekend Sir Aquatom…

It looks clear on the ground today, Andro, but with the fog you can never tell. Black ice can be very tricky…

I loved reading this. It never snows or gets that cold in Sydney, but it reminds me of when I was a little girl living in New Zealand, trying to ice skate on the frozen puddles in my school shoes.

Thanks, Corisel. I remember those ice skating days of yesteryear… now I hurt myself if I just slip!

Tom, I would trade you the warm cold for our non-winter. It is shorts in February over here. Sigh. A change of seasons keeps me balanced.

I hope you get some snow your way. It isn’t fair when the weather teases.

Thanks, Andra. We had some snow before Christmas, and before anybody else apparently. I’m sure that I live in a place just outside of the rest of the country. It is very strange at times, the weather we have here… We do have the seasons, but they all seem to appear in the same week.

Like Andra, we are in shorts as well. Winter ended in January with the last cold snap, and the trees are beginning to leave. My yard is shaggy and will need to be mown by midweek. A far cry from the record three weeks of last winter (when I was grateful beside the lake watching the Canadian geese play…450 miles south of nowhere).

Watch those skating legs. Wouldn’t want you inner contortionist to take the day off and leave you to robot walking indoors.

    Stay warm,
    Red.

Thanks, Red. Our cold winter started in January, and the very cold winter started last week. I love seeing the trees when the leaves are starting to appear!

It snowed here, then the smallest hail I’ve ever seen. More like frozen raindrops.

Yes, Tilly, I saw those tiny hail yesterday. At one time, I’m sure they were mixed in with the rain and possibly some snow – but we mostly had heavy and freezing rain.

    Hi Tom! 🙂

As I mentioned in the guest book we have a few inches of snow here and the roads are passable with care.

Hope your week improves my friend – sounds tricky underfoot!!! 🙂

God Bless and Be Well! 🙂

I do hope it is warmer for you today across the pond. I am so glad your Inner Cotortionist was in quick mode! 😆
Over in Ravenwood it has been sunny and rather unseasonably warm 46 F / 7 C, it will remain the weatherman says well into next weekend. Perhaps even warmer. 😯

Thanks Raven, it wasn’t as icy today, so in that respect it was a little warmer!
My Inner Contortionist tries to help out every now and then, and not very often later than needed!
The weather’s acting kind of strange at the moment, isn’t it?

    Hi Tom,
I had to laugh at your line about being a contortionist, I could just imagine that scene so well, I think I’ve had to do the same crazy flailing of arms and twisting around to keep from landing on my behind on a few occasions too lol. Just thank goodness you caught your balance and no harm done. Icy roads and walkways are sooo dangerous! be careful out there Tom.
Thanks so much for everything you said on my last post, I appreciate it Tom and I appreciate having such good friends on here including you.
    Have a wonderful night,

I laughed myself, Nikki! But yes, icy roads are very treacherous!
And it was a pleasure, Nikki, keep on keeping on as the saying goes… those who are trying to stop you will soon give up when they realise they aren’t going to win!
That’s another fine graphic you have created there too! 😀

I had to laugh! I could just picture you skidding about in the snow! But be careful, snow is pretty but dangerous, mostly like all good things in life!

I don’t blame you for laughing, Susan, I did myself! I think the fear of falling is actually worse than the falling – or slipping – itself. Very often when it’s icy, I’ll have a quick slide or two… not intentionally, but I’m always prepared! 😀

Hi Andro, no, I’m still here! The only ice we have is the morning variety right now, which is swiftly replaced by a thick fog. So, if it was icy, and I did a little ‘jig’ or two, nobody would notice!
I’ve just added another post – it’s another nothing one, I’m afraid, I think the ice has taken my inspiration with it, when it melted… 😦

Ice: the great leveller. There was that legend/apocryphal story about the butcher who put out his stall like all the others on the ice of the Thames in 16-something, and left it there just a bit too long for the sake of a few extra pennies. The ice thawed and he and his stall fell in. Needless to say, his days of serving pork chops were over.

Sorry. Shocking day I’ve had. Always sets me rambling. Thank your lucky stars I’m not parked on your sofa with a cup of tea: I’d be one of those awkward ones who never leaves.

Aw, sorry to hear you’ve had a bad day, Kate. (I seem to remember the legend you have mentioned for some reason too, I’ll look further into that story!)
But Kate, you’ve never tasted my tea! We’d both be awkward in that instance… 😉
Sorry. Hope you’re feeling better tomorrow – or sooner!

There was an unexpected stranger on the railway station platform http://blackwatertown.wordpress.com/2012/02/07/what-do-snowmen-drink/

Yes Cold…. Brrrrrrr… cold.. -minus 3 yesterday and with a promise of dropping further today.. the snow came around 5 cms in places and then the sun came out and it melted slightly.. The conditions you descrbe sound like a Ice Storm.. when is rains and freezers like that….
I am really thankful we havent has it as minus 39 as in other European countries..

Wishing you well and dont do anymore Ice dancing.. just watch that on the TV instead! 🙂

Minus 39 is a bit chilly, Sue… it went to minus 16 here last year, and today’s minus 1 seems considerably warmer than that! 🙂
Yes, I’ll leave my ice dancing to those who are good at it! 😉
