One Minute Ramble: Click for click’s sake!

Does anyone use the WordPress reader at all?

The reason I ask is because mine seems to have changed. Before the changes, I’d go to the reader and click on the link to be able to read the latest post on the blogs that I follow. Bish bash bosh, as simple as that.

Now, when I go to the reader and click the link, another reader pops up, usually with a message saying something like ‘we can’t show all of the post here, click to view the original’, so then I have to click again to get to the post in question.

At the top of the new reader, there’s a link that says ‘View Original’ which takes me to where I wanted to go originally.

So, in the past I’d click once.

Now, I click once, then again to get to the post in a new window. And then I have to click again to close the new reader to get back to the old reader!

It’s tripled my clicking quota!

I’m all for change, but sometimes I wish some things could be left untouched. When you follow six blogs like I do, that’s an extra eighteen clicks!

Sigh.

Moan over.

I’m now bandaging my clicking finger, and about to order a new clicking mouse from Mouses-R-clicking-Us to use as a clicking spare. I believe they are issued with only so many clicking clicks…

I’m not impressed with the new look. Not only do we have to click more than before to get to the post, we are invited to comment on it without having read the whole thing! I wish they’d put it back to how it was. 😦

I hadn’t noticed the comment thing, Elaine, as I much prefer commenting on the site itself for some reason (unless I’m replying through the orange thingy, that is!)

On further inspection I discovered that you can scroll down and read the whole post on the Reader without clicking to go to the original post – which makes the ‘Leave a Comment’ box seem more appropriate.

You can with some, Elaine… but others have a message saying they can only show the first part of the post, which makes the whole viewer rather pointless!
I’m sure they’re trying to make things easier for us… it’s just that I’m used to doing things my way! 😀

Oh, I hadn’t noticed that. Let’s hope they go back to how it used to be – if enough people complain, maybe they will listen.

More likely it will remain this way until they change it again next month… 😉

I don’t know TL….Wordpress seems to be making a lot of changes lately and it usually ends up being more of a problem than it was before if it even was a problem. I always liked the saying ” If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”….I wish WP would listen to that….VK

VK, some improvements are good, others simply aren’t! I think this latest change falls in the latter category!

Sounds like a load of Click! 😦

The trouble with WP is that they seem to change stuff without real thought! 😦

I do most of my reading via email as it seems easier than the reader! 😦

    God Bless!

I get the feeling they don’t look at the wider picture and focus on one element, Prenin. I’m sure they’re doing it to improve things, it’s just that not all improvements suit everyone…

Drat I hate change. I don’t use Reader because there was too much clicking. I went back to reading in e-mails although the return comments I’d read in WP.

Well, if you thought there was too much clicking before, Tess, I’d advise stay away from it now! Very away!

Shows how much I know – I didn’t even realize WordPress had a reader. I aggregate all my blog reading through the Feedly RSS reader. The WordPress changes sound like a major pain in the butt, though. Hope your clicking finger recovers.

Are the RSS readers easy to use, Diane? Are they easy to get? I tend to steer clear of things I don’t understand, but if they make things easier I may have to look into it further…

I like to do my blog reading that way – it’s one stop to read all the blogs I follow, whether they’re WordPress or Blogger or whatever, and I can go directly to a post to comment with one click. There are quite a few different readers out there, but I use Feedly (feedly.com). You can customize the layout so it shows what you want to see, and it’s browser-based, so you can access it from anywhere and you don’t have to install a bunch of software on your computer. Might be worth a try if WordPress is annoying you.

Thanks, Diane. I will check that out over the weekend. Anything that reduces clicking is fine by me!

I’m not liking the changes much ~ features are missing (like word count) and it does take more clicks.

From the replies here, Nancy, it doesn’t seem to be a popular change!

Now that I have an iPhone, I’ve been using the reader more, but all of this clicking makes it harder for me to read posts on my phone while The Boss is not looking at The Grind. But now I’m back to trying to catch up on my blog reading and commenting after work when my mental freshness factor has long passed its expiration date. I think this revision is irritating and a step backward.

I haven’t even tried on my mobile phone, LA… I find the links don’t tend to work very well there. Must be a combination of fat fingers and touchscreen incompatibility!

Yay!!! I’m so glad it’s not only me. Yup…I just had to double click to get here 😛
In an ideal world people wouldn’t fix what was not only not broken but working splendidly. But that’s an ideal world…;)

In an ideal world, Shree, we’d have nothing to moan about. Would that really be so ideal? I like a good moan every so often!

LOL…it would break the monotony of life huh? A good groan and moan ..oo plus a face palm…that too.
You’re right..you know. If this was an ideal world…there wouldn’t reality need to be this world as we know it.

You are lucky that you only follow six
blogs, try that with an added fifty 😦

    Have a truly wicked Thursday
evening Tom and happy clicking 🙂

Andro, I was under-emphasising the problem with the clicks there – I do follow more than six blogs, but was fed up with all the clicking after six!
That said, I’ve clicked through once again to today’s quota from my reader. I’m allowing my mouse cooling time before I read!
Hope you’ve had a good Thursday!

I use the reader from the laptop and find it has varying degrees of usefulness. Email is safer for the mobiles where the reader is scarily greedy on data usage due to the high % of pics to d.load in the reader.

I’ve never tried email, Icewolf. I always used the reader, and found it very useful… but not right now. I’m going to give RSS a test drive. It has to be better!
