One Minute Ramble: Mobile Photography

Mobile phone in hand, I leant precariously out of the upper window in Aqua Mansion. I simply had to take a photo of this alignment before the display was over for another night. No more words – an image was required.
Grasping onto the wall with one hand, and trying to get the best shot in the viewfinder of my mobile phone with the other, without mistaking the street lights in the distance for my required objects, I pointed, clicked and hoped the image would take.
I didn’t want the flash to activate, and I wasn’t sure if the image would be captured, as darkness and mobile phones don’t exactly go hand in hand. You can see someone speaking on a mobile phone from the other end of the street in darkness – they are lit up rather brightly.
But… no flash! The image took! And here it is.
It’s rather grainy, but I’ll put that down to the angle the picture was taken at.
At least I have captured a moment of time in the skies above Cheshire.

It is actually in colour, but that’s quite hard to tell, considering the vast distances involved.

And yes, this is part of my new challenge. Image number one of Cheshire is taken and posted to the blog! Only a few more to go…

27/03/12. I’ve just taken this, again on the mobi, with the Moon and either Venus or Jupiter visible (only just) beside her, in the gradually darkening sky… having said that, though, the Moon is only just visible in this image too!

Yes I saw that too but didn’t think to take a photograph of it, and I
do have a 5.0 mega pixel camera on my mobile so a missed chance,
however I can always call back here and take a look at yours 🙂

Have a great Tuesday Sir Aquatom 🙂

Thanks, Andro, and you can always pop by to have a look!
I only wish the photo was a little clearer – the grainy look’s alright, but it’s not exactly an award winning shot!

I recognise the moon (like who wouldn’t), but what are the other two?

Is the one closest to the moon Venus and the lower one Jupiter???

    Please do tell!!! 🙂

    God Bless!

    Prenin.

I’m a little unsure, to be honest Prenin.
The whole scene looked amazing, so I took the photo. I actually thought the lower one was Mars, and the one next to the Moon was Jupiter. Google Skymap thingy told me Mars was way off the the left of the picture, so that took Mars out of the equation, and Venus was between the Moon and Jupiter. The lower one may be Betelgeuse or Sirius.
According the the skymap today, Betelgeuse is quite close to the Moon, level-wise, and Sirius is lower down in the sky, so if I can see them tonight I may have a better idea!
I actually took another image when I took this one, and thought that I’d captured Saturn, with rings! It turned out to be a street light.

Sorry, Prenin… I was very wrong. I was aligned the wrong way with the map and the Universe. The one next to the Moon, on the right is Venus. The one lower down is Jupiter.
Betelgeuse is there in the mix, over to the left of the Moon, and Sirius is lower down to the left of Betelgeuse. Only they aren’t in the dark image. Or the lighter one for that matter. But they are in the sky!
        Apologies for any confusion!
(And in the new photo, the tiny dot is the Moon, and the microscopic one is Venus. Maybe I should leave this kind of photography to the professionals. Like NASA!)

No worries Tom – I am the king of the cockups! 🙂

Hope you have a great week my friend – and don’t leave it all to NASA, because at this rate they’ll not be able to launch a fourth of July firework, let alone a serious research project! 🙂

          God Bless!

          Prenin.

This is the most interesting one I’ve seen so far, Tom. I love the darkness of it.

Thanks, Andra. I only wish that it was a little clearer. Still, I got the photo, so I’m pleased with that! 😀

Thanks, Cameron. I’ve seen the one that Kate took, with the lighter sky, and that looks good. Mine’s too grainy. I think I’ll describe it as a special effect! 🙂

      It is, isn’t it Tess?
When I usually try to take photos of the night sky with my mobile, the Moon is too bright it appears as a flash, and the rest of the picture is black. This worked, and I’m pleased with that. And with the special effect it has a ‘different’ look as well! 😀
