Distant Memories

Professor Soupal and the apprentice looked at each other wanting to speak but not finding the right words… eventually, the apprentice broke the awkward silence.

‘Well, you got that slightly wrong, Professor,’ he said looking at the large hole in the ground, ‘it was neither Mayan nor old… how did it get there, and where did it come from?’

‘Questions, questions, questions,’ the professor smirked, ‘you sound just like me at your age… how could I possibly answer these questions, though; it was a spaceship – that wouldn’t have been first on my list of things to consider… it was old though, by a pinch, we tested the stone, remember?’

The apprentice was about to speak, when the professor’s face lit up with an expression of a memory springing to mind.  ‘Years ago, before this side of the campus was built, there was an explosion here, a large explosion… a very large explosion…  which people put down to some event during the war. It must’ve been this ship arriving, or crash landing… the area remained wasteland for years before being levelled and then built on… yes… yes… it all makes sense to me now…’; the apprentice frowned and thought you can make absolutely anything fit if you think about it!

(The end.)
