The Unicorn Challenge: Nowhere to Hide

As amazing as the view is, this place isn’t exactly suited for a game of hide and seek, although that seems to be exactly what we’re playing.

Even the van has disappeared. We ‘parked’ on the road that cuts across the flatlands in the lay-by. Sebastian and Rona walked back along the road with the petrol can, leaving Colm, Hannah, and myself to hang around here, in case another car happens to drive by.

The three of us decided to walk across the grassland together, to see if there was a house or something on the banks of the loch we saw from the road.

I looked back to the road after about five minutes and noticed the van had gone. Colm and Hannah were a few steps ahead of me before I turned, and when I turned back to tell them, they, too, had vanished.

The land is flat. There are no trees or dips or crevices or anywhere to hide. Even the grass is too short to hide in, yet here I am, all alone in the middle of nowhere.

I shout out and get no answer apart from my own echo.

I watch as my breath vanishes in the sudden cold that has surrounded me.

The air is charged with some kind of electricity. I feel it tingling around me.

I stop as something icy cold ‘grabs’ my hand.

I feel myself being pulled in all directions.

I try to run.

Everywhere goes dark.

I…☆

I hoped it would, CE, with my little ‘loch’ reference. I’ve never visited Scotland, which, considering I live not really that far away, I should make an effort to do.
      And thanks… it’s a cool and creepy time! 🙂

Since you put it that way, I see what you mean! 🤔 But, do you know what, Ladysighs… that outcome never crossed my mind. No outcome did, actually… they all went dimension hopping, in my mind…

    Damn!

Excellent ‘runaway car’ story. If the bait of the first sentence (as all engaging fiction has) is taken, ain’t nobody avoids the chill at the end.

    nicely done, yo
