A hot day by the Lake

I went for a leisurely stroll around the Lake at lunchtime today. It probably wasn’t, but it must have been a hundred degrees. I was sweltered, and was beginning to think that it may have been a bad idea to go walking, as I could feel my face start to burn. I could actually hear – and feel – it sizzle.

I then noticed this chap, who most definitely had the right idea:

Wading in those cool waters, fishing without a care in the world; least of all the heat. I then noticed that he had his eye on something. Was I going to actually see the grand fisherman at work? There are some huge fish in this Lake. Lucky for me I had my trusty mobile phone primed and ready to go, to grab the money shot as it were.

There wasn’t a fish.

At first I thought nothing of it, and then I thought: an intruder!

A goose and a heron staring at each other, mere metres apart:

I didn’t want to see a fight, but kept my mobile phone handy just in case, as you do. It’s shocking how we feel the urge to photograph certain things… but I thought this is nature at her finest. Wild birds, literally a reach away from me, ready to have a territorial spat.

Do geese and herons spat? I watched on.

Suddenly, the goose turned away. It either thought the heron was no threat so decided to leave it alone, or that the heron was a threat, and decided to leave it alone. I share an amazing psychic link with birds and know exactly what they’re thinking. The heron, however, kept its calm composure:

I then realised I was wrong.

The goose had simply called in the cavalry:

The gaggle of geese (are geese collectively called a gaggle when in the water?) came rapidly out of nowhere (well, the side of the Lake). I’m positive the one at the front was honking some kind of battle cry, and I could see them swimming in a collective rhythmic fashion, left flipper, right flipper, left flipper, right flipper and so on.

The leader stopped honking.

In unison, the geese turned their heads away from me:

I thought that they didn’t want to be photographed, but then they all looked toward me at the same time. Then away from me. Than back towards me again. Unfortunately, I forgot to take photos of this particular sequence.

They broke formation, and I suddenly remembered I had my mobile phone:

And then, without a moment’s hesitation, they all swam by. Quickly and silently.

And under the supervision of a very relaxed fisherman indeed.

It was probably too warm for anything else anyway.

How was your Friday?

Wow, that was a close one, eh? 😉 As for myself, I spent a few minutes studying the ants that are hanging out on the underside of a leaf of one of my sunflowers. They look to be building something and / or farming something under there. Very odd, indeed. Then again, I live next to a former Superfund site…

      Close indeed, CM!
Watching ants always leaves me feeling sleepy… they just work constantly!

I just now checked on the ants again, and they moved the structure I presume they built. It started near the stem, and it’s now more toward the middle of the underside of the leaf. There’s a similar structure and farm (?) area on the underside of another leaf, with ants doting on those too…

Eek. Are you sure they’re ants? I can’t say I remember ants building anything before… unless all of the ants I’ve met are the non-construction type.

The ONE thing I’m sure of is they’re ants… 🙂

    Hmm.

Maybe the Geese decided they had different diets?

Either it was that or a case of Heron forever! 😉

Left, right, left right…. LoL!!! 🙂

    God Bless!

    Prenin.

      It’s very possible, Prenin!
And that is what they were doing – I’m sure of it! 😀

I never knew you had a psychic connection with birds Tom! You never cease to amaze me! How was the hair that day? Only if it was particularly wild and out of control more so than you have been known to suggest it is lol then they might have been weighing up whether it would be a suitable nesting ground!!! That would account for the surveillence routine as they swam past you 🙂 Just a thought!! 🙂 😀

Ah yes, Icewolf… I’m a man of many talents, me!
You may be right, hair-wise. As you know, my hair has a life all of its own, and that day it did have a particularly fetching bird’s nest look about it. Less of a comb-over (as if I need one of those!) and more of a comb-around, up and under. I don’t think anything’s set up home in it yet, though… but I’ll have to comb it out to see!!! 😯 😉

Lovely photos! Coincidentally, we saw a blue heron today, too… and yesterday a cow moose and two babies crossed the road in front of us. Last week it was a family of badgers. I guess everybody’s moving around looking for a cooler spot! 😉

They must be, Diane! Although it won’t be that long now until we’re all looking for something warmer again!!! Sigh.

Love it! Best place to be, with those kind of temps. What a cool customer that beautiful blue heron. No gaggle of geese was about to trouble him was it? Lovely pics Tom 🙂

He wasn’t perturbed by anything, Sherri, even me taking all those photos of him.
It was very relaxing, watching all the action unfold!
