The Green Man

For years, I used to see the face of the Green Man looking back at me from the leaves in trees or bushes. He always had the same expression, a very wide smile, thin features, a long chin and laughing eyes. There was no physical face, his features appeared between the leaves and branches, as if they outlined the space and together they made up the Green Man’s face.

I tried to see if AI could recreate the friendly face that I regularly see. Here are some of the results.

Apart from being too solid, this face isn’t friendly.
This face is in the trunk of the tree, and is therefore also too solid. It has a Norse feel to it.
This is most definitely NOT the face I see. This image is actually quite creepy.
Not quite as creepy as the previous image, this face, although transparent in appearance, is too human-looking to be the Green Man.
Yet again, too human-looking, but I quite like the surreal feel with this one.
Another surreal one, not that the others weren’t, this has more of a Tree Spirit vibe than the Green Man.
And finally, I  like this one, although it is nothing like what I wanted creating. This, though, is highlighting choices to me, and the balance between them. Yin and Yang, light and dark, and different paths to follow.

I wonder if any of these images ‘spoke’ to you. I’d be interested to see if you received a message by looking at one of the images. You could post your message in the comments (only if you want to, mind… there’s no pressure!)… your message may help another reader of this post.

The “actually quite creepy” image spoke to me (not literally). His name is Daniel. He’s deciding whether to trust us, the viewers. He doesn’t intend to be creepy, he’s just learned to pause and evaluate before engaging, because past encounters have cost him. He came from a city, but he’s retreated here, to the trees, which feel more honest to him than what he left behind. He’ll step through the branches in a moment. Or he won’t. That decision is happening in the painting now, in the fraction of a second the painting freezes.
