Facial Recognition

“Oo the blummin’ ‘eck’s thar meant foot be?” Gemevere squinted at the tiny plaque beneath the latest portrait to be added to the Ollerthwaite Gallery. Lady Reverence, revered protector of all of England and beyond.

Chuckling, Hempsty replied, “That’s thine portrait, cousin – the likeness is uncanny!”

“Uncunny?” Gemevere spat, “look ath saarz o’ er conk. Uge, it is. Uge. Airch ooh jay ay. Uge.”

Hempsty rolled his eyes. “I see thine elocution lessons are working wonderfully.”

“Ah kip sayin’ this nart wrong wiv me torkin. Thriz summat wrong wi’ that pairntin, though.”

“Shall we move on to the next one, then? You may surprise yourself and like this one more?” Hempsty gently put his hand on Gemevere’s lower back and shuffled her along to the next painting.

“‘Oo the blitherin’…”, once again, Gemevere focused onto the small plaque. Gemevere Inxlsis.

Open mouthed, she looked at this portrait, then Hempsty, and then the previous painting. “That’s me as well?” She whispered a little too loudly, and clearly, for Gemevere. Lowering her voice quickly, she continued, “‘Oo put thut portrait nuxt tut thuther?”

Hempsty chuckled again. “It’s purely by chance, my cousin. Two different artists painting two different people, provided to the gallery on two separate occasions, yet displayed together. Uncannily funny, if you were to ask me.”

“But it’s not two differnt fok thaw, izit? It’s one, and it’s me. They’re borth me. An’ this’un as me int crarn. I doornt wear me crarn as me, only as Lairdy Reverence .

Fok’d gnaw arm Reverence if thee put two unto together, wi’ this’n’that bein’ theyer.” She thumbed between the two portraits.

Hempsty waited for Gemevere’s next line.

“Mine you, narther look owt lark each other awe me, which is a good thing, ahspose. Arm bored now. Let’s gaw somewhere else…”

Gemevere and Hempsty left the gallery at a quickened pace, led by Gemevere, just in case somebody in the gallery did put two unto together…

A blast from the recent past. These characters have a series, Reverence, in my Storylines menu.

Gemevere really does need them… not that she thinks so herself!
