The Unicorn Challenge, hosted by Jenne Gray and C E Ayr, asks we write up to 250 words based on inspiration gained from a photo they provide.
Here is this week’s photo:

And here are my words:
The last customers left the theme park, and even before the echoes of my sweet pomegranate had faded into the distance, the power was switched off, the turnstiles locked, and all of the staff swiftly departed. It wasn’t long before the sun set, and the empty park was bathed in a crisp indigo light.
The carousel lights flickered on, off, and on again, and the perpetual row of painted horses began their undulating procession one after the other. Organ music seemed to whisper around the movement, almost sighing as it emanated through a portal from a bygone time.
Above the carousel, a manifestation appeared of White Shadow, the famed steeplechase champion who mysteriously vanished twenty-five years ago. She initially stood looking forward like a statue before stepping gracefully, as if participating in a rider-less dressage competition. She then stretched back and extended huge white wings from her shoulders before taking off in flight, disappearing into the light of the full moon.
Silence once more fell upon the carousel, and the painted horses gently came to a stop. The lights flicked off, on, and off again.
All the above took place within the gap between two frames of a piece of film, so nobody knew about White Shadow’s return. It was never recorded on CCTV; not once in the last twenty-four years.
The portal opens frequently, however, and the organ music has been noticed by many people, all of whom think nothing of what they’ve heard.
