Birth of a Hero

I sit and look at the blank screen in front of me, thoughts racing in anticipation of the words I will eventually fill it with; I ponder the location, the weather, the people.

Ah, the people!

I want – no, need – a new type of hero… he has to be male, strong, human (human heroes are good, more believable), with a good sense of humour, and a clever, quirky way to conceal his real identity.

He’s obviously not going to be a millionaire, work for a newspaper, a spy agency or a government organisation, a scientist, astronaut or test pilot; no, he needs to have a normal job, which will bring its own challenges as he needs to find ways to escape for his daring rescues.

But how will he know when he needs to escape… he can’t see everything in his town by looking out of the window next to his desk, especially when the blinds are drawn as Sarah sitting next to him can’t see her screen due to the bright sunlight… he can’t be listening to the police radio all day long, especially when Mrs Jones is on the phone regarding her latest issue… he can’t have a red light on his desk that flashes whenever help is needed… he can’t have a direct line from someone who needs to let him know when help is needed… he can’t have a smoke signal going off outside to alert him (not that he’d see it, thanks to Sarah’s blind)… he can’t have a boss who’s ‘in on it’ and discreetly lets him know that his help is needed… and he can’t craft an easy solution out of his situation… hmmm…

I sit and look at the blank screen in front of me, thoughts racing in anticipation of the words I will use to fill it… my new hero is about to be born.

Posted for Six Sentence Stories. This week, Denise has chosen Craft as the prompt word.

I can feel your birthing pain, Tom. here’s to a safe and -more or less – painless – delivery!

      Here’s hoping, Joy! 🤣
Actually, though, my characters tend to write themselves, so it would be easier just to leave them to it!

Nice tale of the need for a new hero to be born. How will he know? May the Holy Spirit tell him what he needs to do. Then he’ll go to the right place.

There are lots of songs about heroes, Chris, but I’m not sure if there are any about new ones. That said, my musical knowledge isn’t exactly top notch… so there could be! 🤣

An accidental hero perhaps. Found where least expected, stepping up when most needed.

That sounds interesting and plausible, D! Most of my heroes are accidental ones though, thinking about it! 🤔😊
