I sit and look at the blank screen in front of me, thoughts racing in anticipation of the words I will eventually fill it with; I ponder the location, the weather, the people.
Ah, the people!
I want – no, need – a new type of hero… he has to be male, strong, human (human heroes are good, more believable), with a good sense of humour, and a clever, quirky way to conceal his real identity.
He’s obviously not going to be a millionaire, work for a newspaper, a spy agency or a government organisation, a scientist, astronaut or test pilot; no, he needs to have a normal job, which will bring its own challenges as he needs to find ways to escape for his daring rescues.
But how will he know when he needs to escape… he can’t see everything in his town by looking out of the window next to his desk, especially when the blinds are drawn as Sarah sitting next to him can’t see her screen due to the bright sunlight… he can’t be listening to the police radio all day long, especially when Mrs Jones is on the phone regarding her latest issue… he can’t have a red light on his desk that flashes whenever help is needed… he can’t have a direct line from someone who needs to let him know when help is needed… he can’t have a smoke signal going off outside to alert him (not that he’d see it, thanks to Sarah’s blind)… he can’t have a boss who’s ‘in on it’ and discreetly lets him know that his help is needed… and he can’t craft an easy solution out of his situation… hmmm…
I sit and look at the blank screen in front of me, thoughts racing in anticipation of the words I will use to fill it… my new hero is about to be born.
