Aunt Esther’s

The moon looks big and bright in the sky. Aunt Esther’s house always looks imposing when the moon is full and for a few days on either side. I think the shadows make it look worse, especially the one that appears down the left… it makes me laugh as well, as it reminds me of Aunt Esther when she wears her Sunday bonnet – it was always too big for her – her ‘shadow’ looking as though she’s hiding or spying on someone.

The dry ground crunches beneath my feet as I walk along the pavement approaching the house. Something growls behind me, but I know it’s the sound from the animals in the woods across the road settling down. That’s what I tell myself as I quicken my pace.

I run up the steps, convinced there’s something behind me, but I quickly look and see nothing and no one.

I pound on the stained glass window on the black painted double doors at the entrance to the house.

The wind whips up a cold breeze around me as I wait. It feels like cold breath on my cheeks and neck.

I pound on the window again, and, surprisingly, the door creaks open into the dark hallway. I walk in and shout ‘Aunt Esther’, but all I hear is my echo that disappears up the stairs to my left.

I walk forward slowly and step on something padded and round in the hall. I run back toward the door, which slams shut before I reach it. I flick the light switch beside the door, which illuminates upstairs, but not the floor I’m on. It’s OK though, as the light provides just enough light to reveal I’d trodden on Aunt Esther’s bonnet.

I walk into the first darkened ground floor room, which is lit up by an unexpected flash of lightning outside. The thunder that follows sounds as though it’s from in the hall behind me.

I hear a bang upstairs.

I walk back into the hall and begin to shout Aunt Esther again when I notice the door is wide open. Wide open.

Another bang.

Another crash of thunder, followed by another bright flash of lightning.

Still hearing nothing, I begin to climb the stairs. The door slams shut as I feel bony fingers grab my right ankle.

Now, I wonder if you’d like to continue the tale… either in the comments below or on your own site, linking back to here. Just for fun, obviously…

I jerk my knee up, breaking the grasp of the bony fingers, but I lose my balance on the stairs and tumble down to the first floor, cutting my left hand on a rusty nail. Lucky for me, I’m right-handed. But the blood is gushing. Well, probably not gushing, but it’s flowing quite freely, so I quickly grab the wayward bonnet and wrap my hand. Then I sprint to the door and try the handle. But the latch won’t budge. “Aunt Esther!” I scream. “Help me, please!”

I hear a cackling so loud it seems to be right next to my ear. I turn and see her. “Tis the season for spooks and scares!” Aunt Esther says while giggling. She holds up a toy skeleton hand. “These hands are motion-activated. I lined the stairs with them.” She gives a chuckle. “By the way, have you seen my bonnet?”

“You mean this?!” I whip my bloody bonnet-wrapped hand up and wave my dripping red fingers.

“Aaah!!” She turns white as a ghost and in another flash of lightning, Aunt Esther disappears.

Yes, I enjoyed the toy hands twist, and then the disappearing aunt twist at the end. 🙂

Meanwhile, downstairs, a rancid scent fills the air as the cauldron bubbles over with evil makings. Witches cackle and imbibe their morning brew whilst planning and plotting their agenda for the day. Aunt Esther reappears, dressed in black, with her entourage of groupies awaiting to be served morning tea.

A murder of crows, on a stave of wires high, notes the events taking place at Aunt Esther’s house spreading gossip far and wide. Their raucous caw caws assault gelid air as the morn wallows in white dew.

Tom, your haunting stories are difficult to continue…doubt our imagination here but here’s a try.

The door slams shut as I feel bony fingers grab my right ankle…

    Piercing through my skin
Pass the flesh to bones – grips – yanks
    screaming till The End. 😬🤣

I scream and kick with all my strength, trying to free myself from the grip of the unseen assailant. I manage to break loose and run up the stairs to the second floor and see a window at the end of the corridor.

A figure standing in front of the window, blocking my way. Aunt Esther! But her eyes are glowing red, her teeth are sharp and her skin is pale and wrinkled. She smiles wickedly and says, “Hello, dear. I’ve been expecting you.”

She lunges at me, trying to bite my neck. I dodge her attack and push her away. She falls to the floor, but quickly gets up and charges at me again.
Aunt Esther, stop this! You don’t have to do this!”

She laughs maniacally and says, “Oh, but I do, dear. I do. You see, I made a deal with the devil. He gave me eternal life, but in exchange, I have to feed on the blood of my relatives. And you are the last one left!”
