Callum finally completed trimming one side of the square arch on the main path in the gardens of Yelby Manor. He wished he’d started on the opposite side when he finished, after realising it was the trickier side of the two… then, he had to do the top.
He decided to take a break, and sat on the ground with his back against a nearby tree.
He watched a small black cat meander along the path, from side to side, investigating her surroundings.
The cat walked through the arch and vanished in a flash of light.
An odd mist swirled out of nowhere.
A second later, Callum watched as a lady dressed in a long black gown walked back out through the clearing mist. She looked in his direction.
“You there!” She said, with a determined tone to her voice. “Why are you resting? His Lordship will be expecting to ride shortly. His horse needs tending.”
Callum opened his mouth to speak when the lady appeared to pinch hold of something with her right hand, slightly higher than her waist. “There’s no point complaining, boy. I shouldn’t have to come out here looking for you. Come along. Back to the stables with you.”
The lady quickly turned and walked back through the arch, seemingly struggling to pull something with her. She vanished in another flash of light and swirl of mist.
The black cat then returned, walking back the way she came.
Enough’s enough, thought Callum, leaving the job unfinished.
