Ahoy There

“I see land on the horizon,” Adrian Bluebeard pointed animatedly, before continuing, “why are we going the wrong way?”

Captain Jack McCaw, standing at the wheel, shook his head, sighed, rolled his eyes, and gently, yet in his usual stern manner, replied, “Ah, Bluebeard, awake at last… last night’s grog wore off, then… that’s  where you were drinking last night, down at the Mermaid’s Arms. We had to rescue you from the clutches of Mademoiselle Medusa… you must remember that!”

Adrian felt his pale skin turn paler; Mademoiselle Medusa, a notorious sea shanty singer who could drink any worthwhile pirate under the table, and Adrian was merely a novice… he suddenly remembered her dark dreadlocks dancing by themselves in the candlelight… how he became transfixed by them… how he felt stuck like a statue to the wooden keg he was sat upon… how he felt his security levels diminish as he looked into her eyes… how… he shook his head, stood, and ran across the deck and through the deckhouse doors to the cabin below.

Captain McCaw and the other hearties burst out laughing, but soon stopped… the Silent Shadow steered herself around and began heading back into port.

Then they all heard the siren call… the mermaid was calling them back.

For Six Sentence Stories. This week, Denise has selected ‘security‘ as the prompt word.

Even with the dreads that dance by themselves? 🙂

The “Silent Shadow” is a great name for a ghost ship. I can see how the captain would be transfixed by mademoiselle Medusa’s “dark dreadlocks dancing by themselves in the candlelight”.

When the name of the ship came to me, Frank, I loved it too, and couldn’t get it into the story quick enough! And yes… Mademoiselle Medusa has a certain hypnotic charm!

Mysterious and ghostly goings on, on the high seas, Tom. Methinks perhaps the “Silent Shadow” has control over those aboard her rather than the other way round.
