โOoh, Ryan!โ Mabel said sternly, giving her grandson a cup of tea as he sat on the sofa in the living room. โWhatโve you done?โ
โDonโt worry, son.โ George said, taking a sip out of his cup as he sat in his armchair. โYouโve done nowt wrong.โ
โNowt wrong? Nowt wrong, George Green?โ Mabel fumed. โIt was all your fault. If you โadnโt gone knockinโ on next door, Iโd have been โere when our Ryan came in and I couldโve stopped him getting to Dawn.โ
โNan, calm down. Sit down and have a drink.โ Ryan said, โAnd have a custard cream as well.โ
โI only went to tell โim about his security light, Mabel.โ George said.
โOh no you didnโt, George. You went to phone the police. I knew what you were thinkinโ when I saw you standinโ at their gate.โ
โMabel, I said I wouldnโt and I wouldnโt. They might have a camera on the back which caught her going into the shed. I was going to see if they did.โ
โInto the shed? Nan… Grandad, whatโs going on?โ Ryan was very confused. He took another sip of tea when a thought struck him. โWait. Auntie She told me to tell you theyโre looking. Are they looking for Dawn?โ
โLooking? Oh George. What are we going to do?โ Mabel looked down to the living room carpet for inspiration. โGeorge! Do they โave a camera? Next door?โ
โThey do, as it happens,โ George answered, โbut itโs not working. Like the lights. The whole system was damaged in that lightning strike last month, and theyโve not got round to fixing it. He says heโs going to get a new one next month.โ
โDid you tell them about Dawn?โ
โTell โim about a winged alien? Mabel, heโll think Iโm off me rocker. He thinks that anyway, from the way he looks at me sometimes.โ
โA winged alien?โ Ryan asked. โAre you two OK?โ
โYou didnโt see โer wings, our Ryan?โ Mabel asked. โWhat were you lookinโ at? Oh, never mind. Donโt answer. I know what you young lads are like.โ
โNan!โ Ryan felt his cheeks burn. โI wasnโt. I just saw her on the bed and wondered what she were doing! I didnโt have time to look to see if she had wings, or anything else for that matter. Iโd only just got there and shook her when you came in. Iโll go up and have a look now.โ
โYouโll do no such thing, Ryan Green!โ Mabelโs stern tone returned. โYouโll sit there and help us work out what to do. We canโt โave anyone knockinโ on our door, searchinโ the place and finding Dawn.โ
โDawnโs a funny name for an alien.โ Ryan pondered.
โItโs Dawnstar, Ryan.โ George said. โYour Nanโs called her Dawn.โ
โWho would be lookinโ for โer?โ Mabel asked. โI canโt see the police having an alien department.โ
โMaybe thereโs a space police.โ Ryan answered. โOr maybe itโs the scientists. Theyโll probably want to experiment on her.โ
โTheyโll do nothing of the sort!โ Mabel took another sip of tea. โSheโs a lovely little thing. If only she didnโt โave them wings. We could put her in some of my clothes and pass โer off as your girlfriend, our Ryan.โ
โNan, no offence, but your clothes wouldnโt go on…โ
โWhatโs wrong with me clothes?โ Mabel sounded shocked.
โNothing Nan, theyโre just a bit old-fashioned for someone of my age.โ
โOld-fashioned? So thatโs how you see your Nan, Ryan, is it?โ
โNo, Nan, no. Your clothes look good on you, you always look nice. Itโs just… Grandad, you know what I mean?โ
โDonโt bring me into this, Ryan. Youโll never win.โ
โโAng on… Ryan… do you still see that girl you used to see?โ Mabel decided sheโd made Ryan squirm enough. โThe one who wanted to be a, now, what was it, a metalfillyfist? You said she went to uni to study metaliffalissally.โ
โDo you mean Kate?โ Ryan smiled. โNot seen her for years. She moved to Devon. It was a metaphysicist she wanted to be, not what you said.โ He laughed. โI doubt sheโll speak to me now, though.โ
โYou were as thick as thieves, you two.โ Mabel prompted. โSheโll probably know what theyโll be looking for.โ
โI doubt sheโll have the same number.โ Ryan looked over at his Nan who looked back with an expectant yet pleading expression on her face. โOK. Iโll try and phone her.โ
Mabel continued to look at Ryan without speaking. George too looked over in anticipation now, also without saying a word.
โNow? You want me to phone her right now?โ Ryan sounded a little shocked.
โNo time like the present, son.โ George said.
โGo on, Ry, for me. And fer Dawn.โ Mabelโs voice became very soft.
Ryan reached into his jeans pocket and took out his mobile phone. He looked through the contacts, tapping the phoneโs screen when he found the entry he was looking for. He looked at his Nan as he tapped the screen again. โItโs engaged.โ He said.
โRyan, try again.โ Mabel said, losing some of her soft tones. โKeep trying.โ
He called the number again. He nodded toward Mabel and smiled. โItโs ringing.โ
โOh, George. I hope she can help.โ Mabel whispered.
โShush, love. Itโll be fine.โ George tapped his wifeโs arm.
โHi. Kate?โ Ryan spoke into the phone. โKate? How are you doinโ? Long time no speak.โ Ryan glanced over to Mabel. โItโs Ry. Ryan Green! Yeesss!โ He laughed. โI know this is a bit out of the blue, but I need your help. Well, me Nan and Grandad do. This is going to sound really odd, but…โ Mabel rolled her right hand in an attempt to hurry Ryan along. โTheyโre fine. Exactly the same as when you saw them last. Yes!โ He laughed again, โStill the same.โ He listened intently, his expression changing to a broad smile. โOK, then. Bye!โ
โRyan! You didnโt…โ Mabel sat back in her chair.
โSheโs coming round.โ Ryan smiled. โSheโs up here!โ
