Silas is a proud cat, blacker than night itself
When he prowls the gardens, other animals wait
He meanders to the ivy and peers to see who’s in
Looking for his new found friend, Cornelius the Elf.
Cornelius is a timekeeper, never early, never late
And he expects of others what they expect of him.
Silas, this cool dark morning, was far earlier than he should be
And he found Cornelius in his home, meeting another cat
This cat was Tiger, from the street beyond, who too, was big and bold,
But one glimpse of Silas’ bright green eyes simply made him flee.
”Oh, Silas” said the timekeeper, “Why did you do that?”
Because,” purred Silas sheepishly, “I thought that you were cold…
I came to warm you up today, I wasn’t being mean”.
Cornelius tapped his Wizard Watch, and looked into Silas’ eyes
”I meet with many friends, Silas, all throughout the day.
And have to set special times so that each can be seen
Your arrival this morning could have ruined a nice surprise;
But as we’re planning All Hallow’s, today, I’ll let you stay”
”But what of Tiger?” Silas asked, his mew heavy with concern.
Cornelius smiled, ”He did the same as you, one morn,
Frightened away another cat.
But don’t worry, as with the times I set, I know that he’ll be back.”

ah surreal indeed, Sir Aquatom, at first the three lines, then the next three rhyming lines threw me, a different type of stanza, but I became accustomed and enthralled by Silas and Cornelius’s interchange… Now I’m off to find a time keeping Elf, as I’m sure my clocks are not set right for the big night…. xPenx

Thanks, Pen. I’m not sure about this one myself, it kind of works, but equally kind of doesn’t work either. I’ll describe it as having a ‘strange edge’ to it – it is linked to Halloween after all, and all sorts happen then! Good luck looking for a timekeeping elf, Cornelius can’t be the only one! 🙂

I love it, actually, but I read it for the story which was brilliant, the fantastic imagery and the character of the elf who has everything so very well under control…

I so enjoyed reading this!:) Do you actually have cats with those names? I had a beautiful pitch black cat once, he was such a sweet cat, I never could understand where the black cat superstitions came from.

Hi Nikki, no, the cats aren’t mine… I may be wrong, but I have a feeling that the black cat superstition has been around for centuries (I may have to do a little research into that…). I know a black cat who is really friendly though, so I get what you are saying!

I think after reading this one we need another word
for your Dictionary, perhaps something with Cat and
Time thrown into the mix…Or Elf something similar? 🙂
Yes this is certainly an interesting one Aquatom 🙂
