Red Lightning

The apprentice and the professor barely managed to get out of the campus storage facility before a beam of red light followed them out and struck the old oak tree on the opposite side of the road, with a deafening crackle and sending splinters of wood out in all directions. Eunice Fothergill sat with her back against the tree, facing the fountain, as the beam hit and pushed her forward and her face into the strawberry yogurt she was eating. Thinking she’d been struck by lightning, she had the option to sit in blind panic or do something about it… so she swiftly got to her feet and began screaming. A passing cyclist on the other side of the fountain glanced over but carried on his way; Eunice jumped as a hand touched her arm as she watched the cyclist disappear around a corner in the distance.

‘Sorry,’ the apprentice said sheepishly, looking at Eunice’s nose, ‘are you hurt?’

‘Hurt,’ Eunice scoffed, ‘what do you think… I’ve just been struck by light¤’, she couldn’t finish her complaining as another red beam crashed into the tree behind them.
