The Unicorn Challenge: Nightfall

Myrtle and Ognar Rance sat in their caravan overlooking Yelby Marina, Myrtle at her sewing machine and Ognar at his to-be-patented Mini Inventors Kit. Ognar caused a short circuit, which cut out all of the power on the entire caravan park. ‘Whoopsy’, Ognar chuckled, as he felt inside the kit for a mini torch.

Myrtle opened the curtains to allow the lights from the marina into the caravan. The night was crisp and clear, with the reflections of the boat lights doubling the light available. ‘Oh Ognar, it’s beautiful out there.’ Myrtle clasped her hands together over her heart and sighed.

Ognar stood behind his wife, and in a whisper, started singing into her ear, ‘In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight…’

Myrtle whispered, ‘our wedding song…’ and she watched the lights fade away into a memory of their reception at the Cock o’ Hoop Inn, where Glynis Fairchops, or Glinwick as she was known back then, tripped on the hem of her bridesmaid’s dress and crashed into the DJ’s lighting rig, whilst dancing to the very same song, causing a power outage on the whole of Avian Way.

Myrtle now chuckled as Ognar reached the a-wimoweh part. She leant her head back onto his shoulder.

A pounding on the door brought them both out of their moments.

‘Oi!’ someone shouted from outside, ‘Is this you again? It’s the fourth time tonight – just stop doing whatever you’re doing in there!’

They both chuckled again.

I love Myrtle and Ognar’s complete indifference to the opinions of ‘reasonable’ people and their joy in their own wee world.
When they appear, the week is brighter.
And thanks for ‘a-wimoweh‘, Tom – that’s going to be in my head all day now!!

Keep bringing back Myrtle and Ognar. We’re in the middle of a snowstorm in my part of the world with more yet to come, but after reading about their night it doesn’t seem so bad. And the Mini Inventor’s Kit is a great visual. I can’t imagine what might not be in there!

Depends on the neighbour, I suppose, CE. The Rances would be mortified if they knew… 😉

There were some times when I LOL, Tom. Myrtle and Ognar are my favorite WP couple.

Let’s hear it for the free spirits of the universe!

Myrtle clasped her hands as she read Nancy’s lovely comment.
‘What’s that, my little pomegranate?’ Ognar asked, looking up from his welding.
‘It’s Nancy,’ Myrtle smiled, ‘she’s said such a wonderful thing about us.’
Ognar looked out into the world, and bowed gracefully. ‘Thank you, dear Nancy.’ He smiled whilst doffing his hairpiece.

What an honor to be included in the Rance Family Chronicles. Use me as you will, Tom. 😉
I had a book dedicated to me once but I wasn’t in any of the stories (unless by a pseudonym unknown to me). 🤫
This vignette of yours made me smile even more than Häagen-Dazs coffee ice cream! 🍨 😊

Now you’ve said it, Nancy… you do realise, don’t you, that the Rances will be expecting you to appear as a guest star in one of their forthcoming tales!
