The Unicorn Challenge: Roman’s Road

Roman looked at the miles of sand ahead.

He looked at his reddened and sun-dried toes poking out of his sandals and could feel every single grain of sand that touched his feet.

He had an idea and grabbed his second-in-command, who was sheltering beneath a palm tree, surrounded by almost all of the hundred centurions. The remaining four were splashing about in a tiny puddle oasis nearby.

“Augustus Julius,” Roman began, looking up to the most clear sky-blue coloured sky he’d ever seen, “this is ridiculous. We can’t keep trudging through the sands like this. Get the men to gather as many pebbles as they can find.”

Soon after, ninety-four hot centurions and four muddy ones dispersed around the nearby area, collecting anything remotely pebble-like.

Not long after that, they returned. Some had two pebbles, but the majority had one. Roman asked them to arrange the pebbles on the sand as if they were laying a road.

When finished, the road was about two metres long. Roman was slightly disappointed, but being leader, he didn’t show it. “OK, then,” he commanded, “Oscus, Victus, Relfus and Sagittarius, being the most muddy, you will have to constantly move the trodden on pebbles from the back to the front, so the road will be forever opening up before me, until we reach Rome.”

The pebbles didn’t help Roman’s feet any, but they taught the centurions not to play in muddy waters ever again.

A Roman knows two metres long? Eat your heart out, Pinocchio. 🙂

You have the eyes of an eagle, Doug. 😊
There are three reasons for this… 1) it was me telling the tale, and not Roman… 2) a recent catastrophic antimatter explosion has sent shockwaves through the very fabric of time and space… 3) I meant to type ten paces, but hit the wrong keys!
All three work (although number two is the real reason for this!) 🙂

Inspired nonsense, Tom! I wonder if Roman’s road will ever lead to Rome?

PS if Roman has 100 centurions, doesn’t he have as many men as the Grand Old Duke of York?

Thanks, CE. I thought the GODOY had ten thousand men… Roman here only had 99 in his century, with him being either number one or a hundred. I think it’s possible the GODOY miscounted, though, and you could be right! Or, more likely, I could be wrong. 😊

Um, actually Tom, a Centurion had 100 men under him, hence the name.
Sorry, didn’t mean to pick nits.

No worries, CE… I misread my research notes (Wikipedia), thinking the legionaries were the centurions. Roman is the centurion in this particular century. So your earlier comment about the GODOY is more accurate than my thoughts… but I knew I’d be wrong! 🤣 Worry not about picking nits… every day, every moment provides a learning opportunity.
However, as I mentioned to Doug above, a catastrophic event has altered reality around these here parts… so things are not as they seem anyway! Here’s the account of said catastrophic event: https://wp.me/pVkLb-83j

I would link in an old favorite album (The Tubes) but then things would get very confusing.

They already are, Clark! 🤣 Are The Tubes a band/group? My musical knowledge is worse than my fictional Roman history! 😵‍💫

Very clever and imaginative take, Tom!
I’ve always been a sucker for a man in uniform ☺️

Thanks, Nancy. I am right in thinking you’re referring to the more cleaner-looking uniforms and not those muddy ones, aren’t I? 🤔😊

I think the words ‘in uniform’ might be redundant there, Green Eyes!

So, they did line up the stones?

    lol

I would use the term ‘Narrative subversion’ to describe many (but not all) of your ‘corn submissions… but people might get the wrong idea.

They did. These legionaries follow orders to the letter.
I think ‘Factual Fluidity’ sounds a little better (I may use that as a tag or category thing)… although, if one were looking for facts, one wouldn’t really read a story for them, would one? Mind you, I do… I get my facts from anywhere! 🤣
