Valentine’s weekend

Why Valentine’s? Part One: Oh me, Oh my, Oh me, Oh WHY?

Please, give me zombies anytime! Sorry to be negative, but here’s one side of my Valentine’s Day coin…

I know that Valentine’s Day is supposed to be a day of celebration and love, a time for sharing flowers, chocolates and mass produced printed greetings cards with a loved one, yet at the same time it gives wannabe romancers a chance to send their messages of love to someone who they have the absolute worst crush-of-all-time on, and this someone does not even know that the wannabe exists.

Why does the wannabe need to build up the courage to send an anonymous card to their piece of infatuation and not put their name on it? The wannabe will probably never be able to look their ‘target’ in the eye ever again, just in case the person they sent their message of never-ending-love to realises it was them who sent it. The target will never realise it, and instead will think that the card is from the figment of their infatuation. And they will not be able to look this person in the eye because they didn’t send  a Valentine’s to them.

I don’t know. I think Valentine’s isn’t about love. I think it’s about want. How to show the want. Without showing that it is you that wants it…

Another thing that I find funny about Valentine’s Day are the couples who send each other anonymous Valentine’s cards, but in their own handwriting! Ooh, I wonder who this is from? And the arguments that ensue when one of the couple receives an extra card from someone. Probably the wannabe, who neither of the couple know.

I’m not anti-couple. Please don’t get me wrong. I’m also not anti-love. Or anti-Valentine’s Day for that matter. The Aquatom Corporation is set to launch an exciting greetings card range in June this year, and we will be announcing the move of Valentine’s Day from February 14th to July 8th. Traditionalists may oppose this move, of which they have every right, but the move has been arranged. In a Leap Year, February 29th will also be Valentine’s Day, so every four years or so there will be two Valentine’s Days in a year. This is so those who like Valentine’s in February can have one every now and then. The wannabes will love that one! Oh, and look out for our elite range of Valentine’s cards. Slightly more expensive than the regular cards you see, but they come in packs of twelve cards, so you can be spoiled for choice as to who of the people who don’t know you, you can send one to. They also come with a state of the art wobbling pen, so you can disguise your handwriting. The Aquatom Corporation loves love. Love loves love. Love loves money. That’s our slogan… we think it is quite catchy.

That’s a few months away. Many years ago, I received a Valentine’s card off a wannabe. She wasn’t a very good wannabe as I saw her hiding around the corner for about an hour before running up to the door to post the card. She had written her name and telephone number in the card, which kind of defies the reasoning behind the mystery of the Valentine’s card. Unless you are in a couple and you can pretend you don’t know who the card is off, isn’t the mystery one of the ‘fun’ bits about the cards? Maybe I’m looking too deeply into things here. I couldn’t look this girl in the eye again after receiving the card… I don’t know if she knew that I saw her post it or not, but I mean to say…

I kind of feel bad about writing that. She had to build up all the courage she could to post the card, which is a good thing. If there is something you want, you really should do what you can to get it. But some things literally are un-reachable, and unfortunately for her, I was. Not in a big-headed way; just in my way. Sorry about that.

Coming in Part Two… The Up Side to Valentine’s.

Valentines Day gets only one reaction from me and it’s the same one I say at Christmas…….Humbug!

I’m just not the sort to send unsolicited mail to a woman I might be fantasising about because I already know Charlize Theron is never going to be interested in little old me 😉

I’m not the ‘romantic’ sort either. I once received roses on Valentines Day from my now ex wife and my reply was “What am I supposed to do with these?” Says it all really.

Trevor, I actually find Valentine’s quite frightening in case I receive flowers. Not that I don’t like flowers, but because I don’t own any vases.

I don’t see why you shouldn’t send anything to Charlize Theron; you could always pretend that it wasn’t you when you meet her…

hmm. i prefer Lupercalia myself, personal bias, i guess…any chance we could just re-brand Valentines rather than moving it to July?

Bex, between you and me, that is the real reason for the move. The Aquatom Corporation have a need to provide a great range of reasonably priced greetings cards to the world, and an extra festival celebrating spring, fertility and the wolf (generally speaking) opens that window further. They can then tap into the werewolf market, which is growing strong in certain parts of the world. And Lupercalia is a three day festivity, so it may be older than Valentine’s, but it is also bigger and better. So, yes, it is a kind of re-branding but on a much bigger and better scale!

        nice.

it is good to know the The Aquatom Corporation is doing it’s best to meet the growing werewolf market. i’ve been concerned about this one for a while, having many friends who are werewolves.

        looking forward to the re-branding!

I’m off to read the upside of Valentine’s day before I start to cry!! … I live in hope of a card from someone I don’t yet know… (Johnny Depp springs to mind…but then he always does!!) … but then I think again and make myself remember the time I was followed along the street by a bus driver, (still driving his bus…with his passengers enjoying my bright red face as he called me his valentine!!) sigh!! xx

😀 Ah, but would you have been as red if it was Johnny driving the bus? I suppose it must have felt a bit weird being followed by a bus… I take it you were on foot?
