How many Toms?

Yay! another list! Just as an experiment, I thought I would try to see how many famous or well known Toms I could find. I didn’t do very well. I was expecting to find at least one hundred, but in total I found twenty seven. I’m sure there are more, but they all start to merge in to one after a while! The twenty seven also includes me, Aquatom, because to me, I’m the most well known Tom of them all… well, I should be, but my intention of this blog was to find the real me.

Starting at number one, which I always find a good place to start, the first Tom has to be Tom Welling. Clark Kent himself. Smallville is one of my favourite TV shows, so I couldn’t really start with any other Tom. I’ve been very interested in stories featuring Superman (and Super Heroes in general) for about a hundred years, and the Smallville stories have certainly added more depth to the character.

In at number two, another of my favourite TV shows; Doctor Who. Can you guess who it is yet? Yes, that’s right, it’s Tom Baker. And sneaking in at number three is Tom Hopper, who appeared in the first episode of the series that introduced Matt Smith as the Doctor. Tom Hopper played a character called Jeff who teamed up with Patrick Moore to help the Doctor out. I don’t actually remember the stories that featured Tom Baker‘s Doctor, but I do remember feeling frightened when I watched them. I don’t think I actually hid behind the sofa, but I remember burying my head under a few cushions whenever I heard the theme tune. Luckily, the theme now doesn’t have that same effect.

Hokay then, onto Tom number four. BBC weatherman Tomasz Schafernaker. I remember seeing a clip on You Tube of Tomasz getting a fit of the giggles after the newsreader linked to him by saying something like “Here’s Tomasz with a frozen ball” It is quite comical to see him try to keep his composure during the forecast.

Toms number five, six, seven and eight are actors: Tom Cruise, Tom Selleck, Tom Hanks and Tom Conti.

The list continues with Toms who are not real, but are just as famous (to me): Tom (from Tom and Jerry), Thomas the Tank Engine, Tommy Zoom and Tom Thumb (although I’m not sure if Tom Thumb was real or not).

Getting back to reality (well, reality TV shows – see what I did there?) two Toms appeared on Big Brother in the UK. Tom McDermott in the very first series and Tom Oliver who was in the house for only a few days. Tom Chambers won Strictly Come Dancing, and he had previously appeared in Casualty.

Now, on to numbers sixteen to nineteen. Toms from history include Thomas Hardy, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Edison and Thomas Aquinas.

Tommy Cannon (from Cannon and Ball) is number twenty, and along with Tommy Cooper provide the comedy element. Tom Fletcher from McFly and Tom Jones provide the music for the list, and are numbers twenty two and twenty three respectively.

And twenty four and twenty five are filled by a couple more actors: Tommy Lee Jones and Tom Felton.

Position twenty six, in my completely random list, is taken by Tommy Hilfiger, and I can squeeze in Tommy Steele at number twenty seven.

Like I said at the beginning, there probably are many more Toms out there, that I have overlooked, but I’m glad that I only found 27. I couldn’t imagine even writing this post if there were many more. I’ve typed ‘TOM‘ that many times now, I think the T O and M keys may need replacing on my keyboard very soon – they are quite shiny now!
