The Unicorn Companion: Hearse Noir

Myrtle Rance walked through the hallway, pushing her shopping trolley through to the kitchen at the back. She then walked into the living room, where she found Ognar, Glynis Fairchops (with a large brandy), her daughter Susan (with a smaller one) and Cirencester Bloom (of all people) waiting, looking anxious.

‘Oh, hello, Mrs Fairchops, Susan, Mr Bloom…’ Myrtle frowned towards Ognar.

‘There you are, see,’ Ognar said cheerily, ‘nothing to worry about.’ He smiled at Myrtle, ‘Mrs Fairchops was in the opticians when she saw the hearse drive by with you in the front, and a coffin in the back. She made the optician bring her here immediately. Susan then followed just after.’

Myrtle chuckled, ‘Hearse…’ she said.

‘Mrs Fairchops looked like she’d seen a ghost when I opened the door.’ Ognar continued. ‘She was so shaken, I had to open the best brandy.’

‘Now it makes sense,’ Myrtle chuckled again. ‘Noir D’Orreur pulled in to the bus stop as I was waiting, offering me a lift in her new car. I jumped in, and she kindly popped my trolley in the back. I thought she said her car was a Hurst. It was very spacious. Very slow, though… two buses passed us on the dual carriageway.’

‘I told Glynis there was nothing to worry about.’ Ognar said, reassuringly.

‘I realised that as soon as I saw you,’ Glynis said, taking a large gulp. ‘I think you’d best get your windows cleaned.’ She said to Cirencester, who stood open-mouthed.
