‘Oh, Ognar,’ Myrtle Rance carefully folded the letter she’d been reading, and placed it on the envelope it arrived in, beside her ball of Rich Crimson wool on the small table next to her chair, ‘we’ve won again!’ She clasped her hands in celebration.
‘What’s that, my little pomegranate?’ Ognar asked, looking up from the adjustable easel he had on his lap, where he was painting an intricate highlight onto his latest tomato painting.
‘The bus company competition I entered a few weeks ago… we’ve won it! Unlimited travel throughout Yelby and the surrounding districts (with discretionary further afield journeys). Congratulations.’ Myrtle read the important paragraph from memory.
‘I didn’t realise you’d entered that competition.’ Ognar painted a large white dot onto a purple tomato.
‘Course you do,’ Myrtle chuckled, ‘you’re the one who told me to put down something ridiculously memorable. It was to give a name that sums up their new fleet of luxurious double-decker buses.’
‘Ah, yes…’ Ognar added a highlight to an over-furry stem, ‘I remember now. So… what did you put? What did we win with?’
‘Buxsury.’ Myrtle reached for her hanky to dab away a little tear that appeared as she tried to stifle her laughter. ‘They’re putting it on the side of the whole fleet… travel in buxsury. They want to take our photos for their website and the Regional Reporter newspaper.’
‘Well done!’ Ognar placed down his brush. ‘Let’s celebrate with a nice cup of tea!’
‘And biscuits!’ Myrtle added.
Posted for The Unicorn Challenge. A magical challenge hosted by Jenne Gray and C E Ayr. They provide a photo and we provide up to 250 words inspired by it. In my case, the Rances and other Yelby residents seem to have taken over this challenge. And remember, you heard it here first: Buxsury: luxury on public transport, specifically double-decker buses...
