Clementine D’Orreur wasn’t overly keen on the sunshine. On the daylight, truth be told. None of her family were; her husband Hector and daughter Noir affected by it more so.
Clementine shuffled back to their crypt, number 50, Shadywell Mews, in Yelby Old Town. Her large dark sunglasses covered most of her pale face with a heavy black woollen shawl covering her head and shoulders. Her long straight black fringe joining shawl to sunglasses.
She pushed open, with a loud creak, the crypt door, which was always slightly ajar. The gargoyle above the door kept out most people, but the inner door kept out the rest (with it always being locked!) She pulled behind her a self-refrigerating shopping trolley.
‘What have you bought now?’ Hector asked, taking a sip from his steaming green brew, as he saw the rectangular contraption.
‘It’s a one-of-a-kind shopping trolley,’ Clementine smiled, ‘it keeps everything cool and fresh. And,’ she lifted the top of the trolley, reached inside, and brought out a framed painting, ‘I picked this up as well for the kitchen.’
‘It’s hideous.’ Hector almost choked when he saw the abstract tomatoes,’I love it!’
‘I bought them from a lovely older couple on a stall in the village market. Both of them were as proud as punch to make the two sales.’ Clementine took a small slip of paper out of her handbag, ‘The painting is an Ognar Rance original… a designer piece, they told me.’
