Gather round… gather round… my voice echoed around the empty cellar. I say, I say, I say… I laughed, noticing just how small things amuse me.
The light from my torch flickered, creating a strobe effect in the dark room. I was positive I saw a face looking back at me but decided it was merely the particles of dust floating around.
“Are you still down there?” Mensen shouted from the top of the stairs as I tapped the side of the torch to switch it on again. “I’ve got the lights… ‘subdued amber’, as requested.”
“Great!” I replied, and it wasn’t long before Mensen and I had strung the lights, so they snaked around the ceiling. We decided to leave the barrels where they were, thinking they could be used as tables.
Mensen then went back upstairs to switch on the lights, I stayed in the cellar, amusing myself with the echoes. The lights came on in a blinding flash of white, not at all the ambient orange I was expecting.

Instinctively, I shouted aaaaarrrrghhh, wishing due to the echo I hadn’t.
In the bright light, the face I saw in the dust reappeared before me, this time with his full body dressed in old-style clothes, and he too seemed to be screaming as he withered away from view.
Mensen returned, saying, “Ooh, that’s a bit bright,” before looking at me, adding, “it makes your skin look pale… as if you’ve just seen a ghost…”
