Visible From The Moon

I saw a comment very early this morning advising that the text on my site isn’t very clear – it appeared grey on a black background. This was, I think, the third comment I’ve received like this recently. The text should be white on black, and on the devices I use it is, although it can be a little small at times.

So, I thought ‘right… I’ll make the text slightly larger and try to tweak the colours to see if I can make them any clearer’.

Off I went into the editor, and somehow ended up changing the whole bloomin’ theme. The only problem with that is the latest themes use the nightmare that is the Block Editor. I decided to scrap the whole idea, and revert back to the original theme… but no… that theme has been ‘retired’ and I couldn’t go back to it. It would have been nice to have been told that just before changing, but alas, we can’t cry over spilt milk. I’ve also lost the sidebar, which may or may not be a plus.

Onwards and upwards.

I persevered with the block editor, managing to put together the effort that is now my blog. Featured images have disappeared from my home page, and images on the post pages are now either duplicated or are visible from the Moon. I’ve added a nifty carousel at the bottom of the home page, which is also visible from the Moon (if you’re there visiting to read my blog properly.)

I will try to fix the issue with the images as time goes by. The last six hours have been spent just trying to get the site back to some kind of readable format.

I won’t be changing the theme again any time soon, and if the white on black text isn’t clear, that’s staying as it is, too!

My advice – stick with what you’ve got, kids! Unless you have six hours you never want to get back!

But on a positive, I have a new theme. With huge, blurry pictures, but a new theme.

It was a sharp one, Paula… a sharp learning curve, that is! I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it one day… 😌 🙂

Sounds like an absolute disaster to me!!!! Sorry to hear about that drama….I’m sure you will be tweaking the website until it feels right again….Good luck with your endeavors. Maybe you’ll end up liking it even better in the end….BTW, I can see the white print just fine and I’m only across the pond not on the moon….So all is good 🙂 VK

Pleased you can read the text without travelling to the Moon, VK! I probably will be tweaking things going forward, but I must be careful… there doesn’t seem to be an ‘undo’ option which makes things tricky.
It was obviously time for a change, though, so the disaster wasn’t that bad!

It’s all very odd! 🙂 (You don’t need to like this one, by the way! 😁)

I sympathize, Tom. The new Block Editor is a nightmare, and it’s always traumatic to move to a new theme and try to tweak it. Your text is much easier to read now, though, so consider it a win! 🙂

Thanks, Diane. I’m pleased about the text. It looks like I approached the issue with a sledgehammer where the rest of the site is concerned, but it’s all good! And it made for a different kind of day! 🙂

“the nightmare that is the Block Editor.” I second that emotion!! 😤 I stick to old themes with the simple, straightforward, easy–peasy customizer. Which theme were you using? Old themes that are still available to use with the old customizer are Hemingway, Karuna, Toujours…off the top my head. Hemingway might be well-suited to your blog.

The theme I was using was called Anemone, which wasn’t in the list of available themes when I tried to go back. A quick Google search found its page, which was where I discovered it had been retired. I think I may have tried Hemingway in the past; whenever I change the theme, I have to go through quite a few of them to find one I like. The customiser used to give a visual display before the changes we saved, so I tried a few that way. This “new” and “easy” block way is so convoluted, without an apparent undo option, it means saving each change individually and then going to the actual site to see what it looks like, or making all the changes in one go, saving that and checking that on the separate page… and even then, the end product wasn’t as I thought it would be from the block editor’s example.
That said, though, I dare not to change this theme… it’s sticking with me now for all eternity! I just need to try to sort out the ridiculous differences in picture sizes, and maybe try to find a sidebar or footer to use, but that can all wait for now.
Apologies for the lengthy reply, Mother Wintermoon! 😊

I went through many of them too. The “try and customize” option before activation was a great option the new themes don’t have. WP used to have so many fun and creative themes, back in the days before the new block editor. I agree the block mode of customization is convoluted and very time consuming.

The times, they are a-changing! The good thing is, the block editors have been in for a while now, so someone’s bound to come along soon and change them. Things don’t stay the same for long around here! 😁

I know, Chris! But really, change is the only constant! I’m still (carefully!) tweaking things on the site, but my older posts look terrible! Good thing I can’t find a gizmo thingy to link to them! 🤣

That’s ‘progress’ for you, Tom. I don’t have a sidebar and don’t really miss it. I was offered the choice to switch back to Classic the other day and thought twice about it because I didn’t know if I would open up a can of worms. I gather the happiness engineers are no longer happy. What a world!

I only really want the sidebar so I can highlight the posts I like on other blogs to my two followers, Jo. I can live without it. I actually think I like the posts-only look now.
But beware of making changes… those cans of worms are booby trapped!
As for the engineers, they may hold a competition soon to see if anyone can come up with a new name for them! 🙂
