Poppy

Poppy

I was inspired by Jodiโ€™s painting to have a go at painting something abstract myself. I havenโ€™t touched any watercolour equipment for a while, and I thought now is as good a time as any. I attempted three abstract paintings, the first two being so bad they even fell far outside the โ€˜abstractโ€™ category. Never mind, I will paint over them with some texture paste, and then use the paper for something else in the future. Something hopefully better.

For my third painting, and I am calling this a painting as I actually like it myself, is the one above. Itโ€™s still wet in the photo at present, and Iโ€™m not entirely sure how it will look when dry, but I like how it looks now.

Iโ€™m not sure this is classed as abstract, as I intended on painting some kind of poppy this time, but I just sploshed the colour onto the paper and watched what happened. First, the red spread over the wet watercolour paper, and then I added the black which started to do its own thing and blend slightly with the red before stopping. A bit of tilting this way and that allowed the red to run further, and then I added just a few finishing details in the red, yellow and green. Just a dash mind, as I really wanted the emphasis on the red.

The thing is, it reminds me of a poppy, and I am happy with that.

Posted also for Remembrance.

It’s beautiful! Wow! I’m in the middle of a six-session (once per week) watercolour class right now, and I only wish I could create something as lovely as your poppy. You’re so talented! ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks, Diane. I don’t think talent was behind this, though, more luck, I’d say.It just took form, so I went with it.
Hope you’re enjoying your watercolour classes!

I’ve been learning a lot in my classes, but mostly I’m learning that I’m not very good at watercolour. Baby steps… ๐Ÿ™‚

You’ll get there, Diane. I think just doing and not thinking helps…

You’re right – I’ve definitely been overthinking it. (At least, that’s my excuse.) ๐Ÿ˜‰

I would buy this Tom. I have a long standing love affair with Poppies, so anything poppy ‘speaks’ to me, and this watercolour speaks to me loud and proud.

How big is the painting Tom?

Great work … … if you keep going in this direction I think you could make money from your artwork.

Really, Cobs? Ooh, thanks very much for saying that!
It’s only A4-sized – in one of those ring-bound watercolour pads.
I am tempted to having a go at creating others this way… time permitting! ๐Ÿ˜€

I found myself getting lost in the scattering seeds, and I may write something about that for Remembrance Day.
