Musings

Apollo looked on at those gathered in the field. Scantily clad Gods and Goddesses unfazed by the rain that was lashing down around them; the humans, fully clothed and huddled together, shuddering and shivering, trying their very best to keep themselves warm and the baby dry.

โ€œWeโ€™ve really messed up this timeโ€ Apollo said to his father, Zeus, whoโ€™d just approached him.

โ€œThis is what we do, my childโ€ Zeus responded, โ€œSince the dawning of time we have found ourselves in situations such as this, some as trivial, others with far-reaching consequences.โ€

โ€œBut weโ€™ve ripped some people from their correct place in the Universe, altered the flow of time, and created something of a paradox. The mortals cannot handle such upheaval.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t write us off, young man.โ€ Ethel said, as she walked up. She had been listening to their whispered words, and spoke without realising that the Gods, even Apollo, would have been hundreds of years older than her.

โ€œYes, weโ€™re morsels. But weโ€™re good โ€˜uns. Weโ€™re good at handlinโ€™ things when we really need to. We just do. We donโ€™t handle the weather very well, though. I donโ€™t know how you can all stand it, with your frocks clinginโ€™ to your very shiny muscular frames as they do.โ€ Her mind and her eyes wandered slightly.

โ€œWe have no right being here. You have no right being in our presenceโ€ Apollo brought Ethelโ€™s attention back to his face.

โ€œNonsense, my sonโ€ Zeus brought Ethelโ€™s attention over to him now. โ€œEverything happens for a reason. This meeting between Gods and mortals may have been a side-effect of a rash decision made by three of our number, but that decision led us to this point. This point will lead us on to another point further down the line. Everything is fineโ€

โ€œFine?โ€ Ethel asked. โ€œIโ€™m knee-deep in mud, waterโ€™s trickling into places Iโ€™ve never felt water trickle before, Iโ€™m freezinโ€™ cold, in the middle of a field, in the middle of a storm, in the middle of the night, talkinโ€™ about life and handlinโ€™ things with a group of half-dressed tall people who talk funny, not entirely sure whatโ€™s goinโ€™ on, and Iโ€™m startinโ€™ to get a headache. Yep. Everythingโ€™s just fine.

โ€œIโ€™m saying that we morsels are good at handlinโ€™ things. Iโ€™m also saying that we donโ€™t have to like them โ€“ the things we have to handle, that is. But we do. And we do well.

โ€œYes we fight. Yes we argue, and have wars and stuff, but through it we keep on. We keep on keeping on. Weโ€™re good at that!โ€

โ€œWe are the same,โ€ Zeus continued, โ€œand my son is wrong. You are worthy being in our presence.โ€

โ€œMe?โ€ Ethel started to like Zeus. โ€œBut I think itโ€™s time we were getting home. All this rainโ€™s no good for the baby, you see. Gerald will be very cranky later โ€“ heโ€™s starting to go now. Itโ€™s a good job that heโ€™s too young to remember this tonight; I can jusโ€™ imagine โ€˜im in a few years time dreaminโ€™ about this, and not understanding. Iโ€™m startinโ€™ to hope that Iโ€™m too old to remember it as well. But, obviously Iโ€™m not.โ€ She smirked and chuckled to herself as Zeus and Apollo looked on stony-faced.

This is the next instalment of my Legendary Circles storyline. Iโ€™m still trying to get back into the swing of this olโ€™ blogging thing, so thought Iโ€™d add another part to my ongoing taleโ€ฆ well, this ongoing tale anyway! The previous part can be found by clicking here, and the whole story so far can be reached by following the links in my Storylines Menu.

Thank you, Lady P, ’tis good to be back too, although maybe not quite as often as before, at least for a while. We’ll see!
I agree, I like writing about Ethel, originally, she was going to be a background character from the past, but I wanted to include her more in with the story!
      And Pen… keep smiling! ๐Ÿ˜€

Just goes to show you it takes a plucky human female to shake things up a bit, the gods included. I had to chuckle at Ethel. I like her character a lot.

    Welcome back whenever you can.

I like Ethel as well, Tess. She gets a bit mixed up every now and then, but she’s fun to write!
